An example of when this is likely to be useful is when you want to set full colour schemes but also want to allow slightly more flexibility without drilling all the way down to editing full colours.

Can we simplify the colour scheme options a little so that you say choose the background colour of all consonants / vowels/ numbers by default then have the option to drill down and vary these individually?
