I understand that as of now, essentia combination is a considered, yet ultimately denied, concept.
Essentia is a currency first and foremost, and its value comes from how scarce and difficult each aspect is to obtain. Being able to simply combine the base six, which can be easily farmed, together simply breaks the balance of the mod.
However, I do have some problems with that reasoning and some ideas on how to do essentia combination in a more balanced manner.
Firstly, most of the essentia CAN be farmed already. Want Volatus? Just keep a chicken coop. Want Praecantatio? Use Netherwart to get Vitium and centrifuge it. Want Sensus? Bonemeal.
I personally do not see the argument that essentia combination means that people will immediately farm for it. If you simply take the time to look at what essentia comes from where, you'll find at least ONE thing that can be farmed to get it. It's unavoidable.
The main reason many people want essentia combination is because it's annoying having to either build several farms or scour the world to properly enjoy the mod. Some people are just here for a good time, not a long one. All essentia combination does is give the people who don't have the time to explore this mod the chance to actually see what it has to offer. The people who farm will build their farms and nothing will realistically change for them, while the people who are more casual about the game won't get frustrated.
However, considering all of this, I do think that essentia combination should not be an easy task.
So, I propose this: why not use infusion?
It gives you the opportunity to add several additional ingrediants, such as requiring one of all six original vis crystals, some precious metals like gold, and then the phial of what you actually want to infuse onto the element.
By tying it to infusion, you've forced the player to wait a decently long time for just one measly phial of a combined essentia, upped the cost significantly, and added the possible dangers of flux and infusion stabilization to the mix.
At that point, most non-desperate people will just toss items into the cauldron and grab the essentia like normal.
Even at max speed, infusion is far too slow to combine essentia in bulk, which makes the player weigh their options: explore, farm, or deal with the wait.
I hope I managed to bring up some good points, and I wish to hear what your thoughts are. I won't blame you if you still think essentia combination is imbalanced, but personally I think it only makes sense given that the simple act of putting coal on a stick turns Ignis, Potentia, and Herba into Lux.
Plus, I'm hoping someone makes an addon that adds some synthetic essentia with more unique and niche uses, like using Vis Crystals to make lightsabers with special effects depending on the essentia or dabbling in the forbidden art of creating life. Thaumcraft already opened the door for a lot of cool ideas, and I think that essentia combination could open another door.
