#### Setting expectations

- Radically different expectations depending on buddies

- A hard to achieve dream: someone with goal to be around first few sessions on a Saturday. Have a conversation with every trainee and assess every few weeks in sessions. Having conversations with buddies. What have you been seeing in their code?
- They need to have difficult conversations with people who aren't getting it and not thriving on the course.
- After every module, check progress and if they're not doing the stuff then there needs to be an intervention.
- Continue handing out a PIP with a meaningful conversation.
- Trainees haven't understood what is wrong - and don't know when they are doing something wrong
- Sometimes the problem is simple to fix: keyboard is in the wrong language!

#### WM5 JS1 checkin

- Trial: around the end of JS1 - have a conversation with every trainee in West Midlands for no more than one hour. In an ideal world, do this every 2 weeks. But it will be a starting point. A week's worth of work.
- Get key volunteers to have this discussion and write down the guidelines.
- PD volunteers are a step removed from volunteers
- Consider role for engineering managers in the organisation
- Start small with regions like West Midlands

#### Portfolio

- Employability renamed to Portfolio
- Will talk about portfolio for the whole year
- People need a space to build more projects
- Working in teams of 4 or 5
- Engaging with PD people
- Portfolio time will try to stimulate a work environment - delivering products
- At 10am on Saturdays have a standup
- Let trainees decide what they want to build
- This is about keeping people engaged with team work when the course has ended
- Establishing the rules of the team from the beginning
- Type a message saying you agree to the rules
- Have a conversation at the start about how you're going to work together
- Try and get people to demo to each other frequently
- Rituals - you show up - what should you be doing?
- Pick one feature - do it backend to frontend
- Sketch out a wireframe
- Don't pick up anything else until the user story has been implemented
- Possibly two ways to pick a first story - give a user value or what do you want to practice
- Fill out a form or make a good widget
- Different aims depending on what you need
- Focus on what you want

- Random stuff to finish the day: game or team building: recruitment workshop - something to keep PD people engaged
- Do a retrospective in week 2
- Sit down with mentors and get unblocked
