The the two components; firechat.js and firechat-ui.js separate because its is expected that some users will utilize methods and the API and render the data manually? Or is there a different reason for the separation?

I ask because my use case requires a more wide spread integration of chat into the app.

Yes it's decoupled so that you can write your own ui.
