Eelgrass (Z. marina) extent within the greater park ecosystem of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve eelgrass monitoring sites (2017, 2018) v1.0.0

Best Practices Checklist

In General

  • No previous versions of this metadata record exist (eg for earlier versions of the data, if so update that record rather than creating a new one)

Data Identification

Dataset title:

  • No version information in the title
  • Frontloaded (with the most important information first)
  • Include the geographical region the data apply to
  • Short – aim for 60 characters including spaces
  • Does not include acronyms – put these in the keywords
  • Does not include the word “dataset”
  • Time series datasets should include “time series” at the end of the title

Abstract

  • Abbreviations have been expanded upon at first mention
  • Abstract describes how, when, what, where, why of data collection and is limited to no more than 500 words

DOI

  • A DOI has been drafted for this record
  • DOI has been updated via the form after review and changes to record
  • DOI has been manually edited on datacite fabrica
  • DOI status has been changed from Draft to Findable

Spatial

  • Ensure that Depth or Height Positive is correctly selected

Contact

  • ROR and ORCID(s) are included and linked properly where applicable
  • For datasets where DFO is a partner, ensure 'parent' ROR is added (https://ror.org/02qa1x782). DFO 'child' organizations (i.e. CHS) and their ROR are optional.
  • Include Hakai Institute as Publisher and include data@hakai.org as email
  • Make sure email address is provided if the role is 'Metadata Custodian' or 'Point of Contact'
  • Add contact affiliation where known including ROR
  • If resource is (partially) generated by Hakai researchers, include 'Tula Foundation' (with associated ROR) with 'Funder' role. Be sure to uncheck 'include in citation' for Tula Foundation.

Resources

  • Resource links go to specific dataset download (not generic platform like waterproperties.ca)
  • Readme, changelog, data dictionary, protocols included in data-package (for tabular text based data)
  • An archive folder, or other means, for older data versions is included in the data package if the version is not 1.0
  • Links work
  • All files in the data package can be opened and are not corrupt
  • No executable files in the data package. Files should be open formats and standards (.csv, .txt for example)

@lreshitnyk I just created this issue so I can more 'formally' review the record and will provide any suggestions/feedback here. I hope to get to this later today or tomorrow!

Hi @lreshitnyk some minor suggestions / comments:

  • I would remove the version element in your title. Versioning is included in the title through a separate field in the form.
  • I noticed that in the abstract, your preferred way of attribution (mainly the title) is different from the current recommended citation. Is the title of the data record accurate or would you want to change this to reflect that?
  • Do you have a start date for when the data was first collected?
  • Due to recent changes in the form, when the record is for a biological dataset, a description of the geographic extent is required under Spatial. Perhaps something like: Pacific Rim National Park Reserve on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Canada?
  • I have added 'Hakai Institute' now with the role 'Publisher' separately so that this can be included in the citation.
  • Does Jennifer have an ORCID? I see that under 'Contacts' her last name is "Yakimishyn", but in the abstract it's "Yakimyshyn".
  • If you're a Point of Contact I would recommend including your email address.
  • Under Platform I would suggest including information on the platform (i.e., 'unmanned aerial vehicle') and instrumentation information (DJI Phantom Pro 3, SplashCam Pro)

Would you like me to review the contents of the data package itself as well, or is that not necessary? :) I will leave that up to you! If you do, could you provide me access to it?

Looks great @lreshitnyk, a few minor additions that I've made:

  • Added platforms codes (controlled vocab as per L06 vocab) for the drone/ROV
  • For most other records I believe your affiliation is 'Hakai Institute' rather than Tula Foundation, so I've changed it to Hakai Institute. Please let me know if you disagree!

Great! I've published the record to the catalogue and where necessary made updates in DataCite as well. Will confirm tomorrow that metadata record is in the Hakai Catalogue, and if it is I'll close this issue :)
