Best Practices Checklist

In General

  • No previous versions of this metadata record exist (eg for earlier versions of the data, if so update that record rather than creating a new one)

Data Identification

Dataset title:

  • No version information in the title
  • Frontloaded (with the most important information first)
  • Include the geographical region the data apply to
  • Short – aim for 60 characters including spaces
  • Does not include acronyms – put these in the keywords
  • Does not include the word “dataset”
  • Time series datasets should include “time series” at the end of the title
  • Does not include the time period (this is covered in the temporal extents fields)

Abstract

  • Abbreviations have been expanded upon at first mention

Spatial

  • Ensure that Depth or Height Positive is correctly selected

Contact

  • No organizations listed under first / last name
  • ROR and ORCID(s) are included and linked properly where applicable
  • The citation in the metadata record matches the preferred citation mentioned in the data package.
  • Include Hakai Institute as Publisher (& Distributor?)

Resources

  • Resource links go to specific dataset download (not generic platform like waterproperties.ca)
  • Readme, changelog, data dictionary, protocols included in data-package
  • An archive folder for older data versions is included in the data package if the version is not 1.0
  • Links work
  • Resource link links to a download of the compressed data package (.zip) of the correct version.
  • All files in the data package can be opened and are not corrupt

Hi @emilyhaughton. Thanks for submitting this!

I'm just reviewing now and have a few questions:

Dataset Identification

Contact

  • You need to get an ORCID to officially link this dataset to you in the publishing cyberinfrastructure and then inlcude this in your contact section: https://orcid.org/register
  • I would suggest including an ORCID for Bill and Shawn as well
  • Consider expanding initials in the contact section to full names. They will be abbreviated in the citation, but available in full in the metadata which is nicer.
  • Include Hakai Institute as a Publisher.

Resources

  • Consider adding a short description. eg. link to data repository containing the newest version of the Air Temp and RH .csv data files. (Side note: it looks like the data in the underlying GitHub repo hasn't been updated for the past 2 months. Is that right, or does a newer version need to be committed?)
  • The README in the GitHub seems out of data based on the title: "Hakai Institute TaRH-time-series-v1.0.0_2019-2020"
  • The changelog.txt file in the repo looks like it needs to be updated as well?

You might want to consider using GitHub Releases to version this dataset: Create a release n GitHub and tag it with the same version number you're using in the changelog and metadata record. You can then change the download URL to a specific release version, and include URLs to old versions... For eg: https://github.com/HakaiInstitute/jsp-data/releases

Is this related to the new ERDDAP datasets in development for the watershed group:

If yes, maybe we can revise and simplify the data submission workflow to simplify the whole process.

Hey @emilyhaughton I'm just going through some outstanding items in this repository, and noticed this record sitting in the submitted phase. I'm wondering if this is still a record that you / the Watersheds team is interested in making public? If so, in addition to the comments and questions from Jessy / Brett above:

  • What is the theme of this record: Oceanographic, Biological or Other?
  • Would you like a DOI associated with this dataset so that you can more easily reference this record?
  • I'm assuming there is no taxonomic coverage included with this record - so I've included that under 'Taxonomic Classification'
  • If possible, could you add your, Shawn's and Bill's ORCIDs?
  • Could you add Hakai Institute (role: Publisher) to the record?
  • Could you add Tula Foundation (role: Funder) to the record, but not include it in the rec. citation (unselect that box)?
  • From the repository it seems like the current version is 1.2.0? Should the repository be made public?
  • Are the ERDDAP datasets that Jessy mentioned above related to this record? If so, they should be added as Related Works.
  • I would add information on platform or instruments used to capture the data.
  • Should the title be: Observed air temperature and relative humidity from small coastal watersheds in British Columbia, Canada? (Based on the readme file in GitHub)
