i just spilled something on my carpet. Unfortunately,in my office right in the middle. So now, l have to spend a few minutes tring to get the stain out. i've been using this new charcoal toothpaste,l really like it,but i was picking stuff up off mu office floor when Sawyer called me. "Mom i need you",and l said"i'll be there in a second".And of cource, some charcoal toothpaste fell out of my mouth right onto the floor
i am feeling a little bit of altitude. i think my workout was rough,so i don't think i can walk very far. Okay,so what about tomorrow? So it is supposed to be thunderstorms from 9am 4pm And we fly at 11 something. i didn't check that. So it's like a 90 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms. Ah,that sucks. We might get pushed. That would suck. It sounds like if we get pushed,we might get pushed to like the next day Oh didn't think about that . No ,i bet they can get us out but not direct, that's going to be my hope. Oh, interesting Yeah, and maybe there will be like windows because thunderstorms are often like patchy right okay so the flight's at like 11.45 ,11.47? Yes. Are you okay with getting there at 10.30 or is that too tight for you? l don't know this airport . l don't either. l would say 10.15 10.15, okay , So,we'll leave here at 10 . Okay . Or five till? Okay. Five till is great. Okay, 5 till . 9.55 Okay l like to be push it .Tom likes to be there with plenty of time .Time to spare as they say. You konw l consider the airport a chance to sit and read a magazine maybe or just like collect your thoughts . lt's nice time for yourself as opposed to a. time to panic And see,l'd. rather do all that self time at home Ah, yes but you can't because l can't because at home ,you're worried about like what's going to happen on the way.like will it be a traffic jam? Will it be a detour? Do l have to get around something?ls there going to be something happening at the airport that demands that l slow down? Have you ever missed the flight? Never. l have once. And for me , for the amount of times i've flown it is such a fair trade to miss once.l mean the hours saved at airports. That's fair ,that'r fair.. You wangt to take a peek? Yeah sure. Beautiful bird on the left. l don't know it folks, here, wait we're going to back uup real quick. is it close to the road or Yeah, right on the. road. Hopefully,l don't spook him. With the beeping. Are you getting eaten alive? No, are you? Did you get that? What was that? The prong horn crossing l did. Are you getting bitten?

Okay So why are you starting a podcast? Well l've never been a huge podcast listener, and recently some friends started podcasts, and as l started listening to them to see what they were abhout,l realized, this is a really fun format.lt's a really fun way to talk about things .l feel like in my Youtube videos, there, it's sort of a formal feel . You know , l'mteaching something. Let's be serious and teach .And the podcast feels like it has room to be a lot more conversational , and that sounds really fun to me. And ,and after all ,the people who are following Rachel's English want to know a lot about conversational English. And so, since l'm going to have a transcript available for each podcast , l feel like we can really speak at a normal conversational pace . And for people who are having a hard time catching all the words, they'll have that as an option, that transcript to go back and look it up.So l guess it's that . lt just feels like a really fun way, a. new way ,to talk about these topics.
Cool so l wnated to know more about why do you think it's going to be fun? What about pod-what about a podcast is going ti be fun? Well it took me a while to decide what my different episodes were going to be like, and l don't know if you know this, but l settled on the idea on that, actually you were going to be in almost every podcast Well because it's a lot more fun to have two people involved ,because, hence, the conversation happens,lt's hard to have a conversation by yourself, and that's just another way to make it a little different form my videos, which are generally just me traching something . Here,it's you. and l discussing something, and l'm for -let's just go ahead and say it . l'm the expert here . You're not . But,so,that's interesting. You can add a different perspective to what l'm saying. You may stop me and ask me questions that l didn't think about .Um,and l , l just think that because you , my husband , will be in on these podcasts , that , you know , potentially , it will just be a more friendly ,open kinds of conversation . Maybe little anecdotes from our lives come up .And l'm looking forward to sharing that king of thing more.
you definitely are the expert , but one of the things that's been interesting over the years that we've benn together is,l've become an expert in how much l'm not an expert. l mean , it's been really fun to sort of learn from you about all the intricacies and nuances of language that l had no idea about .And even as a native speaker , l , you know , l see the English language ad hear the English in a realyy different way . so it'll be fun. to talk with people a little bit ahout that along the way too . SO ,let's gei into some of this and l know that this is a question that , for you ,you get asked often whether we're at a party or you're meeting someone for the first time and beacuse you don't have a quick and tidy answer , it's been sort of annoying almost at times , but here you go inthe moment, on the podcast SO ,what do you do ? l do hate this question . lt's such. an American thing to ask it right off the bat. But l have a couple different things l've been trying out lately. Sometimes, l just say, l make YouTube videos . And then, people have no idea what to say in response to that , because l can tell they want to say , no, l meant, what do yu do for work? They're just not quite sure what l mean if l'm saying , l make YouTube videos for work.lately, l've been saying , l run an online school. l think that makes more sense . lt's more direct, and it's only been the past six months that l've been able to say that , beacuse l just launched six months ago . So, that's what l would say .l run an online school where l teach English as a second language to intermediate to advanced language learners
l want to hear you describe for everybody a. little bit about how did Rachel's English come into existence ? Give us a little bit of the story.l mean, where did this thing come from but at any rate,it hadn't been around that long. l was living in Europe
Lola said you asked about her potate mashers . Your kid is super dope . And l was thinking
As a part of that , l was hanging out with a bunch of people over the world
You know , when l thought, when l was thinking about going to Germany to study German ,l thought l would be speaking German all the time with German people . l thought l'd be hanging out with Germans. But really, l was in school a lot of the day. And so, l was not hanging out with Germans . l was hanging out with other people studying German . And one guy in particular , a guy from Turkey , we ended up having .
l think ,six months of class together in a row,so , we became pretty good friends ,and he was interesed in American English and movies , American movies, and want to sound more American. And so , he was having me coach him a little bit . He'd sya a couple things . l would tell him what to change to make it sound better , and l remember describing the ah vowel to him . He was not making it .And so , l said ,well , you're missing a vowel. Let me show you what it's like .And l was descrbing what the tongue should look like , and then he said , you're really gooa at that.
Yeah , that sounds about right . And , but l think another thing that's interesting is that you were a student at the time that you decided to teach , and l think you're said to me before that you were in Germany trying to learn German, and you knew at points that you didn't quite sound like a native German speaker , and you sort of had a desire for something to exist to help you sound more like a native German speaker . Like ,that would like have been nice
