The G2e version of the assembly manual dosnt say anything about running the gears in with a drill like it does on the standalone version. My prints look like they have backlash artifacts even after loosening the tension screw to the point where it loses grip on the filament. I'm starting to wonder if this is the reason.

That's because G2E's manual is up-to-date for the injection molded parts, while the G2SA manual still assumes MJF parts. The injection molded parts do not require being run-in with a drill. if you're having backlash artifacts, I would double check your planet to sun alignment (reset the carrier in the ring gear housing and make sure it rotates smoothly all the way around).
