For color scheme, I think we should either use the PS color scheme (for consistency) or one of the well-established color schemes from perceptual science. Tableau did significant work on this (however, with a white background) and came up with the Tableau 10 color palette (link). This has been fairly well adopted in the vis industry—for example, it's one of the default color schemes in Vega and Vega-lite—which I teach with so know it well.
