At least in the US, intersections are considered to have crosswalks whether they are marked or not. We've been thinking of it as "crosswalk or missing crosswalk" when it should really be "marked crosswalk or unmarked crosswalk". From the FHWA:
Thus, a crosswalk at an intersection is defined as the extension of the sidewalk or the shoulder across the intersection, regardless of whether it is marked or not. The only way a crosswalk can exist at a midblock location is if it is marked. Most jurisdictions have crosswalk laws that make it legal for pedestrians to cross the street at any intersection, whether marked or not, unless the pedestrian crossing is specifically prohibited.
Potential solution(s)
To address this confusion, I think that the best thing is likely to rename our "Crosswalk" label to "Marked Crosswalk". We could potentially abbreviate it in some rare cases if we are very tight on pixels.
