<hephaestus root>/debian directory contains files required to create .deb package. Somehow it is not building the source package. Please follow the following steps
to create a *.deb package

PREPRATION:
 1 -- Make sure you are on a DEBIAN or DEBIAN based system
 2 -- make sure your computer has installed packages 'dh-make' and 'fakeroot' 
 3 -- make changes to 'debian/rules' and 'debian/control' if required

PACKAGING:
don't run dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot. it will try to run all kinds of default scripts, which we don't need

 1 -- fakeroot debian/rules clean
 2 -- debian/rules build
 3 -- fakeroot debian/rules binary

thats it. It should create a *.deb installer in a dir one level above <hephaestus root>. If it doesn't work (you are out of luck). Read documentation "Debian New Maintainers' Guide" at <http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/maint-guide/> chapters 4-5-6
