Describe the real-life Issue

Description

1. What is the Issue:

  • Many large corporations utilizing open-source software fail to provide adequate support or give back to the community.
  • There's a notable absence of financial or other forms of support from these corporations, leading to imbalance and strain within the open-source ecosystem.
  • This lack of support undermines the sustainability and growth of open-source projects, creating challenges for both project maintainers and contributors.

2. Affected Parties:

  • This issue affects not only the open-source community but also the corporations leveraging open-source software.
  • Project maintainers face difficulties in sustaining their projects without sufficient support, while contributors may feel discouraged by the imbalance of contribution versus utilization.

3. Repetitive Nature:

  • The issue of corporations benefiting from open-source consumption without providing support is a recurring problem.
  • It continues to surface as corporations overlook their responsibility to contribute back to the projects they rely on, perpetuating a cycle of imbalance and dependency.

4. Impact:

  • The lack of corporate support inhibits innovation and collaboration within the open-source community.
  • It creates strains on project maintainers who struggle to sustain their projects without adequate resources.
  • Additionally, it hampers the diversity of contributions and fosters an environment of dependency rather than collaboration.

5. What Counts as Contribution:

  • Giving financial support through donations and sponsorship to open-source projects.
  • Allowing and encouraging employees to dedicate a minimum of 10% of their working time to contribute to open-source projects.
  • Collaborating with open-source projects on shared goals and initiatives to drive innovation and advancement.
