What would you use this icon for?

To indicate an element/entity/instance is a child in a hierarchy.

Give us an example of what this icon might look like.

This looks like an opportunity to add several hierarchy-* icons based on the sitemap icon which is the closest in semantics, combined with the file-tree icon which gives good box sizes for when there's 2 children instead of 3.

I wouldn't name them tree-* because that's better aligned with natural trees, but I would add tree aliases because it's a widely spread term for hierarchies in diagrams and computer science in general.
