"The display will be split into four panes, with the bottom two being the zoomed areas. By having more room for the zoomed image, it should show a greater magnification, not more of the zoomed image."

This will work great for landscape-oriented images but tall skinny images will still be a bit awkward. We are going to go with this anyway.

Altered - we have two squares, side by side, but the base images can scroll down so the bottoms are above the zoomed images. Adequate?
