Hi @akprasad,

I have been working on sa_somadeva-kathAsaritsAgara.xml. I have managed to work through most of the text except for few parts.
Need your suggestion on the following queries I have:

  • Issue 1: Few verses are not transcribed in the gretil file. When I checked the the PDF, the verses have dots. I was not sure how to deal with these. Please see below:

    Case 1: Verse 6.3.68 - Text is partially not available
    In TEI File:

    <p>tathā ca śṛṇu vacmy etāṃ kīrtisenākathāṃ tava /
    // SoKss_6,3.68 //</p>

    In PDF:
    image

    Case 2: Verse 8.6.244 - Entire verse is missing
    In TEI File:

    <p>// SoKss_8,6.244 //</p>

    In PDF:
    image

    I couldn't find anyother good editions on archive. However, I found the text on wisodomlib, but found that such verses are skipped.

  • Issue 2: Found a set of verses at the end of the text. They don't belong to any lambaka. Not sure where to include and how to number these. (They are titled granthakartuḥ praśastiḥ. Please see those verses below:

Forgive the slow reply. I will follow up tomorrow.

For issue 1, I think TEI has conventions somewhere for marking up a text lacuna, which is what I believe these periods represent. Not sure about issue 2.

  • Issue 1: Thanks for the pointer for issue 1. I read the documentation on the TEI site. There is <lacunaStart> to record a text lacuna. But the documentation suggests to use <lacunaStart> within <lem> or <rdg> elements. I couldn't wrap my head around how this can be encoded.

I was exploring other options and found <gap> element can be used instead. I think we can use this to encode missing text. There are two options to encode.

Option 1: Just wrap the missing block in <gap> element as below:

<gap reason="illegible">
<p>tathā ca śṛṇu vacmy etāṃ kīrtisenākathāṃ tava /
// SoKss_6,3.68 //</p>
</gap>

Option 2: Wrap the missing text in <gap> and then wrap the entire block in <del> as below:

<del>
<gap reason="illegible">
<p>tathā ca śṛṇu vacmy etāṃ kīrtisenākathāṃ tava /
// SoKss_6,3.68 //</p>
</gap>
</del>
  • Issue 2: Could these be wrapped in <back> element? (Also, note xml ids for these verses are encoded as SoKss.Back.x) Please see below:
<back>
<p>granthakartuḥ praśastiḥ |</p>

<lg xml:id="SoKss.Back.1">

Your thoughts?

Thanks for looking into it!

For option 1, I think something like this might work instead:

<lg>
<l>tathā ca śṛṇu vacmy etāṃ kīrtisenākathāṃ tava /</l>
<l><gap reason="illegible" /> // SoKss_6,3.68 //</l>
</lg>

For option 2, I think this is a reasonable approach. The only catch with back is that it must be a child of text, not of body.

We can always revisit the specifics later. I take the attitude that it's better to ship something acceptable then improve it over time rather than wait for something perfect.
