How to debug kernel when porting?

Hey,guys. I go for an android kernel porting for my SAMSUNG MSM8X55 phone, similar to GT-i9001. But I don’t know the fundamental technique of kernel debugging.
In addition, without any instruments, I can’t connect to UART. Trying to port kernel based on GT-i9001 cyanogenmod sources, then I compiled CWM recovery, but it couldn’t boot, and I can’t get any kernel log.

you can try to mod init script's on initram to start adb earlier. and then dmesg!
