Stuttering/freezing sound

Sound is stuttering with my external USB sound card and completely freezing with the internal sound card (after a few seconds). The files are played from a SMB mounted remote device.

When playing local files, the situation is significantly better, but still with slight clicks every few seconds.

I also hear the intermittent clicks when playing local MP3 files via mpg123.

Are you using ALSA or pulseaudio?

Hmmm, my alsa sound is a bit scratchy but never stuttering. I'm streaming
over a LAN and playing via omxplayer
