Mame: Artwork not displaying for single screen Game & Watch games.

Issue description

Haven't played Game & Watch games in Mame for a while now but in the past they used to all play fine without any problems. Including the official Batocera 40 build.

Now running latest Batocera 41 development build. When playing Game & Watch games in Mame the artwork for single screen games isn't displaying. However all Multi Screen Game & Watch games display the artwork correctly and play without any problems. Its only when I play a single screen Game & Watch game that the artwork is missing.

Have also updating the Game & Watch artwork in Mame to the latest versions. In case anything had changed but still didn't help.

Artwork is stored in: "/userdata/bios/mame/artwork"

Detailed reproduction steps

Install Mame Game & Watch games
Install artwork files to "/userdata/bios/mame/artwork"
Update gamelists
Under Advanced Game Options. Select emulator "MAME" for each game
Run game in Mame

Details of any attempts to fix this yourself

Updated the Game & Watch artwork in Mame to the latest versions. In case anything had changed but still didn't help.

Added two log files. Created when starting a game using Mame. The working game logfile contains a multi screen game that loads artwork file and plays correctly. The not working game logfile contains a single screen game that plays fine but doesn't load or display the associated artwork file for the game.

Solved: User Error. Please close.

What you need to do for each Game & Watch Game in Mame

1. Run a game and press tab on the keyboard to open up Mame settings.
2. Select Video Option then Screen #0. Select your desired screen layout. Then close Mame settup to save the changes.

I had to do this as well as configure the controls for all Game & Watch games in Mame.

I’m glad you got this working.

just want to note that it shouldn’t be this involved to set up a game & watch game.

I just tried on the latest v41-dev butterfly build and I went into Game Settings -> Per System Advanced Configuration -> Game and Watch - Emulator and set it to MAME

I updated my game lists and was able to play Donkey Kong Jr. (gnw_dkjr.zip) without having to bring up the MAME UI or configure my gamepad (DualSense)

It’s possible you might have a different configuration and just wanted to make this note that it should be plug & play for the most part.
