Originally opened as adobe/brackets#8809

Steps to recreate:

  1. Run Windows 0.42 installer on a temporary profile.
  2. Installer errors about said temporary profile.
  3. Installation does not continue, regardless of administrator privilege.

Not sure if bug or feature, but it is inconvenient for use at some college campuses.

@IceHusky Can you provide more specifics about what error you're seeing? A screenshot would be helpful. Or even better, an installer log file would be awesome:

  1. Open command prompt
  2. cd to folder containing the installer MSI file
  3. Run msiexec /i Brackets.Release.0.42.msi /l*v brackets_log.txt
  4. When the installer is done, upload the log file as a Gist and paste a link here. (Or email a private link directly to me -- pflynn at adobe).

Just as a side note (not directly related to the bug reported), this is one reason I'm looking forward to adobe/brackets-shell#333 landing. I also cannot install Brackets on the computer at college (but I do not recall if there was an error message). I've worked around it by copying the installation from my laptop to my flash drive, then copying extensions from %AppData% to www/extensions/dev. However, this is an imperfect solution, not to mention new extensions are installed to the user settings, and a portable solution would fix all that.

I did find this linked on the forum topic for the aforementioned PR. It might serve as a temporary workaround for now,@IceHusky.

@le717 Interesting, I wonder who's distributing that? Is it code signed? We certainly can't vouch for the bits there :-)

@IceHusky Is the error you're getting "Installation directory must be on a local drive"? That has been reported in some cases where the user account has unusually restrictive permissions. See workaround here.

@peterflynn I do not know who is distributing it, but it is indeed Brackets. The App\Brackets\Brackets.exe file from the "Sprint 42" download is code signed by Adobe Systems Incorporated at ‎Thursday, ‎July ‎31, ‎2014 1:41:14 PM, which is exactly the same as the Brackets.exe file from the MSI downloaded from brackets.io. I opened it, and it is appears to be good. Virus checks come back clean. Everything looks to be fine.

@peterflynn No, that is not the error I am seeing. It is just a windows warning box that says "This profile is a temporary profile." and when closed interrupts the installer prematurely. I'm not currently at the college campus where the issue was created, but I will likely be there tomorrow and if it will help I might grab a log. I don't actually frequent the campus I was on as it is just a partner of my actual enrolled college, but@le717 might be able to help with that, as he has said he has the same issues.

Reviewed low priority (especially given that portable build may be a good solution here).
