ALT option of the selection tool is not working

Dear Developers of MeshLab,
Good morning.
Many thanks for developing such an useful software. Presently I am trying to learn it from the tutorials by Mister P. I hope to use the software for research based on 3D models of paleontological specimens.

I am facing the following problem:
Pressing ALT key has no effect on the rectangular selection tools.
The "eye" mouse icon does not appear.
Faces and vertices are getting selected on both the visible and the back side.
I have tried both the ALT keys on either side of the spacebar.

Note:

1. CTRL and SHIFT keys presses are producing desired results.
2. The brush selection tool is working properly.
