The cost of keeping frii.site alive

Don't worry! We aren't going away anytime soon 🙂
So how much does it cost? As of 21/7/2024, about 22€ per year. (This does NOT count developer hours)
So where does the cost come from?

The main problem currently is that we don't know if Namecheap will increase the price of renewing the domain. Here is a thread talking about this issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/NameCheap/comments/yhhrzy/renewal_price_going_up_over_1200/
It currently shows that renewing is 22€/year, but that might change at any point.

We currently don't have any plans to sell frii.site away, but ads might be coming to frii.site in a quarter of a year.
Keep in mind that these are if the amount of users stays the same. frii.site has seen an explosive growth in the last 3 months, where over 200 people signed up to use frii.site. This has caused a few problems though.

1. Cloudflare's DNS limit for free tier is 1000, considering that every user can make 4 free records, this is a problem.
2. We use Resend's free tier of email services, which limits emails to 100/day, and 3000/month. Every time a user joins frii.site, they get sent a verification email, which will cause the number to go up
3. Vercel has a few limits, but we aren't close to them yet.

So what does this mean? We are dangerously close to hitting a few of these limits.

DON'T WORRY

We don't expect to be hitting these targets in 3 years. We should be good for at least those 3 years. We might not hit those records in the near future, considering that frii.site's growth has been slowing down for the past 2 months.

Should I be worried

No. frii.site will be kept live somehow, even if that means self-hosting everything.

Why was this post made?

We value transparency with our users.

Future plans

We have big future plans, and this project isn't going to be discontinued anytime soon 🙂
