[09:19.000 --> 09:25.000]  Yes, there was human sacrifice in the Mayan culture, but it wasn't a pious act.

[13:34.000 --> 13:38.000]  In fact, I can even thank people that have attacked me in the press and the watchdog groups

[22:27.000 --> 22:31.000]  that is how many newspapers they sell, how many subscribers they have,

[22:33.000 --> 22:38.000]  And that's with major papers in the last few years getting caught inflating their list,
[22:38.000 --> 22:42.000]  combining old list of subscribers that they had,
[22:42.000 --> 22:45.000]  that they no longer have in a desperate attempt.
[22:45.000 --> 22:47.000]  But I'll tell you what mainstream media is still good at,
[22:47.000 --> 22:50.000]  that is especially the newspapers and television,
[22:50.000 --> 22:56.000]  is selling people advertising at vastly inflated prices.
[22:56.000 --> 23:00.000]  But then you get an alternative website that, say, has 100 times the viewers
[23:00.000 --> 23:03.000]  of some local newspaper readers.
[23:03.000 --> 23:07.000]  But they can't even get money for advertising, but the mainstream media still can.
[23:07.000 --> 23:12.000]  So that's the last part of the paradigm that hasn't been completely shattered yet,

[23:17.000 --> 23:22.000]  The Dallas Morning News makes over $100 million a year, supposedly, in advertising.

[23:25.000 --> 23:30.000]  supposedly, newspaper readers or viewers are online.

[24:13.000 --> 24:18.000]  The guy gets paid $280-something million in a nine-year contract.

[25:00.000 --> 25:02.000]  How are they going to try to reverse that?
[25:02.000 --> 25:07.000]  But one of the few little parts of this paradigm that still hasn't been shattered is,
[25:07.000 --> 25:12.000]  though in major polls, 84% that numbers come up many times in the last few months
[25:12.000 --> 25:16.000]  in scientific polls, 84% don't approve of Congress.
[25:16.000 --> 25:19.000]  84% don't believe the official story of 9-11.
[25:19.000 --> 25:25.000]  Cheney only has a 12% approval rating, so it's even lower with some individuals.
[25:25.000 --> 25:29.000]  But for the first time, you have people totally not trusting either party,
[25:29.000 --> 25:32.000]  the system being exposed, and being in a lot of trouble.
[25:32.000 --> 25:34.000]  For the point of time, magazine has to say,
[25:34.000 --> 25:38.000]  the person of the year is you. Come by our magazine with a tinfoil cover
[25:38.000 --> 25:41.000]  and look at yourself in it and feel important and powerful.
[25:41.000 --> 25:43.000]  That gimmick is not going to work with people.
[25:43.000 --> 25:47.000]  They've had a taste of freedom, they've had a taste of the alternative,
[25:47.000 --> 25:50.000]  and now the establishment's moving to shut down the web, restrict it,
[25:50.000 --> 25:53.000]  tax it, regulate it. That isn't going to work either.
[25:53.000 --> 25:56.000]  You cannot stop this virtual migration.
[25:56.000 --> 26:02.000]  You cannot stop this usurpation of your monopoly.
[26:02.000 --> 26:04.000]  And it's been broken into a million different pieces.
[26:04.000 --> 26:08.000]  I love it. I saw a story a few months ago, CNN was panicking going.
[26:08.000 --> 26:12.000]  In the past, we all had one cultural book we read from mainstream media,
[26:12.000 --> 26:15.000]  and we were all cohesive when everyone could basically be programmed by us.
[26:15.000 --> 26:17.000]  I can't believe they were admitting it.
[26:17.000 --> 26:19.000]  And now that's not working anymore.
[26:19.000 --> 26:22.000]  I mean, they were openly, hey, you control freaks.
[26:22.000 --> 26:25.000]  That's right, you're going to really have to compete now,
[26:25.000 --> 26:27.000]  and we'll see how you like it.
[26:27.000 --> 26:28.000]  But let me get back to what I was saying.
[26:28.000 --> 26:31.000]  The final piece of the paradigm that hasn't been shattered is this.
[26:31.000 --> 26:38.000]  Number one, alternative media doesn't make the money anywhere near one-one-thousandth on average

[27:06.000 --> 27:10.000]  People still feel like that's the establishment and that's the final word,
[27:10.000 --> 27:13.000]  and everybody thinks they're a bunch of liars and propagandists,
[27:13.000 --> 27:15.000]  but we still feel like we're alone.
[27:15.000 --> 27:20.000]  People haven't figured out yet that the original old paradigm has been shattered,
[27:20.000 --> 27:24.000]  though the worm is now turning and that's being discovered.
[27:24.000 --> 27:28.000]  So it is extremely, extremely exciting.

[28:05.000 --> 28:08.000]  Americans spend more time watching TV, listening to the radio,
[28:08.000 --> 28:12.000]  serving the Internet and reading newspapers, it seems, than anything else except breathing.
[28:12.000 --> 28:16.000]  In fact, media use has risen every year since the start of the decade,
[28:16.000 --> 28:20.000]  helped by faster and easier ways to get information, entertainment,
[28:20.000 --> 28:22.000]  according to statistics, and the new government report.
[28:22.000 --> 28:28.000]  Next year, Americans are projected to spend more than nine and a half hours a day with the media.

[28:39.000 --> 28:45.000]  Then it goes through the numbers that the Internet has now eclipsed print media,
[28:45.000 --> 28:49.000]  that is, newspapers, and it's fast eclipsing television,

[28:53.000 --> 28:57.000]  And then if you look at that piece of the pie, people on the Internet, porn is number one.

[01:09:01.000 --> 01:09:05.000]  He's trying to make them all look like a bunch of barbarous killers, and, you know, he makes them look bad.

[01:09:14.000 --> 01:09:26.000]  She said that the Alzheimer's Statesman's story excused human sacrifice as valid, a pious act, and done with solemnity.
[01:09:26.000 --> 01:09:33.000]  And regardless of how you view human sacrifice, I think Mel Gibson's allowed to make a movie about it and depict it.
[01:09:33.000 --> 01:09:37.000]  And it's, people are always wanting attention to Minnesota America.
[01:09:37.000 --> 01:09:42.000]  This is what the second big movie that's ever been made about it, and it's been number one at the box office for two weeks.

[01:12:06.000 --> 01:12:16.000]  I was very interested in cave exploring as a junior high school student and started getting really active in caving all the way through high school and all on into college.

[01:12:17.000 --> 01:12:20.000]  Well, cavers call it caving. You know, other people call it spelunking.
[01:12:20.000 --> 01:12:26.000]  In any case, I mean, long story short, this led me to Belize where there are lots and lots of caves.
[01:12:26.000 --> 01:12:29.000]  And at the time I went there in early 70s, they were largely unexplored.
[01:12:29.000 --> 01:12:31.000]  You can go through those on the intertubes.
[01:12:31.000 --> 01:12:37.000]  Some of them, as a matter of fact, I'm the person who pioneered that cave that's now a big tourist cave.

[01:12:40.000 --> 01:12:45.000]  I'll tell you all about it. Ian Anderson's a friend of mine, and actually I'm one of the very first people that ever went through there.

[01:14:40.000 --> 01:14:44.000]  Well, there's no clear evidence that they were escalating the sacrificing.

[01:14:48.000 --> 01:14:57.000]  In Apocalypto, the story that we're being told is that they're escalating the sacrificing because they're being beset by drought and several kinds of plagues.

[01:15:03.000 --> 01:15:16.000]  But it's clear that they made sacrifices about both animals and humans to propitiate the gods, to have favorable weather, and to have the gods support in warfare.

[01:15:21.000 --> 01:15:32.000]  But then I've seen these shockmulls, you know, the person sitting with their knees up on their elbows and then the tour guides were saying that that's where they've been them over and cut their hearts out.

[01:15:36.000 --> 01:15:40.000]  Well, the sacrificial altars that they've bent them over, I mean, there's archaeological evidence of that.

[01:24:04.000 --> 01:24:11.000]  He reported in great detail that the Aztecs did things like that in vast numbers of people or two vast numbers of people.
[01:24:11.000 --> 01:24:14.000]  He was saying 20,000, but people are now estimating that it was probably thousands.
[01:24:14.000 --> 01:24:19.000]  Well, we don't know. I mean, yeah, I see it just kind of gets reduced down to smaller numbers.
[01:24:19.000 --> 01:24:22.000]  But in any case, it was still very large scale sacrifice.
[01:24:22.000 --> 01:24:25.000]  We don't have any evidence that the Maya did that kind of thing.
[01:24:25.000 --> 01:24:31.000]  But as far as whether the Maya did public human sacrifice, I think we have every bit of evidence to suggest.

[01:24:33.000 --> 01:24:39.000]  It was spectacle. It was a spectacle. Sometimes it was private, but sometimes it was public.

[01:24:44.000 --> 01:24:50.000]  Well, the Romans did ritualize sacrifice. It was just done in a more of sporting way, you know, out there in the arena.

[01:24:55.000 --> 01:24:57.000]  We who are about to die salute you, right?
[01:24:57.000 --> 01:25:05.000]  Yeah, we'll start with the gladiator, but by the time they were done, yeah, bears and elephants running around and running over people and burning them and just nuts.
[01:25:05.000 --> 01:25:10.000]  Well, I would say, and the crowd apparently went nuts from everything we know about that phase of history.
[01:25:10.000 --> 01:25:16.000]  I really think that our species has on some deep down level and a fascination with this kind of thing.
[01:25:16.000 --> 01:25:21.000]  We have a fascination with death. We have a fascination with blood and gore.
[01:25:21.000 --> 01:25:27.000]  And I think we need to find some way to channel that in a positive way. We can't deny it.
[01:25:27.000 --> 01:25:28.000]  And we are predators.
[01:25:28.000 --> 01:25:31.000]  We are predators. That's right. You know, other primates eat meat.
[01:25:31.000 --> 01:25:36.000]  You know, we thought for a long time chimpanzees only, you know, pluck leaves off trees and fruit and so on, but they eat meat.
[01:25:36.000 --> 01:25:38.000]  No, they kill other animals, even rocks.
[01:25:38.000 --> 01:25:39.000]  That's right. They do.
[01:25:39.000 --> 01:25:43.000]  So we do have a bloodlust issue somewhere deep down.
[01:25:43.000 --> 01:25:48.000]  And then a lot of human culture has been focused on containing that or channeling it.

[01:25:54.000 --> 01:26:01.000]  And a lot of ancient peoples and some modern peoples have rights of animal sacrifice or human sacrifice.
[01:26:01.000 --> 01:26:13.000]  And I think that one of the burdens upon us or at least one of the directives that we have to address is how do we spiritualize that?

[01:26:22.000 --> 01:26:29.000]  Now, you work closely with Mel on the film. Tell us about that process.

[01:26:32.000 --> 01:26:38.000]  There was one week where we had something like 10 to 12 hour days and he was there almost all the time.
[01:26:38.000 --> 01:26:42.000]  And he is on top of every nuance of that film.
[01:26:42.000 --> 01:26:46.000]  And he's a guy that just doesn't seem to be able to sit still.
[01:26:46.000 --> 01:26:50.000]  He'd sit down for about 15 seconds and then he'd be up and walking all around.
[01:26:50.000 --> 01:26:57.000]  And when we weren't actually engaged in the ADR in the sound studio, which is a very sensitive set of microphones,
[01:26:57.000 --> 01:27:05.000]  and the actors are up there at the microphones, and they've got cues to overdub what they see on the screen with the lines.
[01:27:05.000 --> 01:27:07.000]  And you're there trying to make sure it's as accurate as possible?
[01:27:07.000 --> 01:27:16.000]  I'm there to help them make it as accurate as possible, to correct any errors that may have been in the original script, and also to add off-camera lines.
[01:27:16.000 --> 01:27:21.000]  And I was working with a young man named Nicholas Pott, and it's important to acknowledge him.
[01:27:21.000 --> 01:27:26.000]  He's a native speaker who lives in Los Angeles, but he doesn't speak much English at all.
[01:27:26.000 --> 01:27:31.000]  So I kind of helped build a bridge. He and I were conferring constantly about the best way to say something.
[01:27:31.000 --> 01:27:37.000]  And so we really were a team in this project, and there were times when we were up on the computer upstairs,
[01:27:37.000 --> 01:27:42.000]  you know, writing dialogue as well, which then they could choose from in some of their off-camera lines.
[01:27:42.000 --> 01:27:46.000]  But Vell is just, I mean, I'm really impressed with him as a director.
[01:27:46.000 --> 01:27:54.000]  He's on top of every emotional nuance of that film. Everything you see in there has passed muster with him.
[01:27:54.000 --> 01:27:57.000]  And especially the character development.
[01:27:57.000 --> 01:28:01.000]  And I think the character development in this film is just absolutely superb.
[01:28:01.000 --> 01:28:04.000]  Both the good guys and the bad guys, you really care about them.
[01:28:04.000 --> 01:28:11.000]  Exactly, especially Jaguar Paul, and then you've got the head warrior guy that's chasing him.
[01:28:11.000 --> 01:28:14.000]  Zero Wolf, right. Zero Wolf.
[01:28:14.000 --> 01:28:19.000]  He's got human skulls hanging off under his own chin and hanging off his shoulders.
[01:28:19.000 --> 01:28:28.000]  You know, I mean, that's fairly realistic because the ancient Maya did sometimes decorate themselves with human skulls and human hands,
[01:28:28.000 --> 01:28:33.000]  skinned hands, stuffed and, you know, hung in little garlands around their neck.
[01:28:33.000 --> 01:28:36.000]  I mean, there's a lot of evidence of this kind of thing.
[01:28:36.000 --> 01:28:47.000]  So I think one of the most powerful things about Apocalypse is the compassion that the audience just has to feel for Jaguar Paul and his community.
[01:28:47.000 --> 01:28:57.000]  Well, I do feel compassion for him, and it was so, and some have likened it to watching some anthropology film on the Discovery Channel.
[01:28:57.000 --> 01:29:03.000]  I mean, that was so realistic just from what I've seen in footage of people in Brazil and places.
[01:29:03.000 --> 01:29:09.000]  Sure. Now, it was not quite realistic in the sense that during the period just before the Spanish arrived,
[01:29:09.000 --> 01:29:19.000]  most of the people who were not actually in the urban centers were still attached to, affiliated with and engaged in trade, commerce and paying tribute.
[01:29:19.000 --> 01:29:22.000]  But there weren't that many people who were living in purely tribal bands.
[01:29:22.000 --> 01:29:25.000]  No, but there could have been some. There could have been, you know, in remote areas.
[01:29:25.000 --> 01:29:28.000]  There could have been people who were out just totally isolated.
[01:29:28.000 --> 01:29:29.000]  I wouldn't deny that.
[01:29:29.000 --> 01:29:38.000]  But when I read, though, the Aztecs, I mean, from the Aztecs now, would march out and, you know, to get captives for sacrifice.
[01:29:38.000 --> 01:29:43.000]  Well, then the Mayas did it too. But the Mayas, from their own stories that they tell us,
[01:29:43.000 --> 01:29:53.000]  suggest that it was done primarily in a battlefield context, where they go out and meet warriors from other cities.

[01:34:55.000 --> 01:35:00.000]  And I mean, he attempts to really immerse you with the original language.

[01:35:30.000 --> 01:35:33.000]  I mean, as a storyteller and you're trying to set a backdrop

[01:35:37.000 --> 01:35:42.000]  You're going to have to collapse time and you're going to have to make a kind of cultural mosaic.
[01:35:42.000 --> 01:35:48.000]  Either that or you set your story completely accurately within one small time frame.
[01:35:48.000 --> 01:35:54.000]  He chose as a narrator to create characters that are larger than life
[01:35:54.000 --> 01:35:57.000]  and a backdrop that was spectacular visually.

[01:35:59.000 --> 01:36:04.000]  And he did it by collapsing a little bit of the pre-classic Maya culture
[01:36:04.000 --> 01:36:08.000]  into a chunk of the classic culture, into a chunk of the post-classic culture
[01:36:08.000 --> 01:36:10.000]  and created something which didn't exist.
[01:36:10.000 --> 01:36:13.000]  As far as we know, we have no evidence that it was anything like that.
[01:36:13.000 --> 01:36:17.000]  But he was made up of pieces that were accurate
[01:36:17.000 --> 01:36:19.000]  and it was not done in ignorance.
[01:36:19.000 --> 01:36:21.000]  It was done absolutely deliberately.
[01:36:21.000 --> 01:36:24.000]  Well, I am a buff on the Revolutionary War and I went and saw the Patriots.
[01:36:24.000 --> 01:36:26.000]  It's extremely accurate in many areas.
[01:36:26.000 --> 01:36:29.000]  In other areas, it is a mosaic.
[01:36:29.000 --> 01:36:33.000]  In fact, he took three different or the writers of that,
[01:36:33.000 --> 01:36:36.000]  took three different historical figures there in that area of the Carolinas
[01:36:36.000 --> 01:36:39.000]  and kind of put them together because in two hours you've got to.
[01:36:39.000 --> 01:36:42.000]  You can't go show every character everything that happened.
[01:36:42.000 --> 01:36:45.000]  But it was all based on real things that happened.
[01:36:45.000 --> 01:36:49.000]  I think that the objection that arises about apocalypto versus the Patriot
[01:36:49.000 --> 01:36:52.000]  are other things, like I mentioned in my email The Firm,
[01:36:52.000 --> 01:36:58.000]  which creates a rather distorted view of the legal profession in the United States,
[01:36:58.000 --> 01:37:05.000]  is that we assume that most of the audience, when they see a film like The Patriot or The Firm,
[01:37:05.000 --> 01:37:08.000]  know a little bit more about the background, the real background,
[01:37:08.000 --> 01:37:12.000]  and so they can contextualize what they see as a cultural mosaic,
[01:37:12.000 --> 01:37:16.000]  a mosaic of the sort you mentioned.
[01:37:16.000 --> 01:37:21.000]  Whereas a lot of people that see this film apocalypto don't know anything about the Maya.
[01:37:21.000 --> 01:37:24.000]  And so the objection, which I don't share,
[01:37:24.000 --> 01:37:28.000]  is that the first time that people who are not even innocent about the Maya
[01:37:28.000 --> 01:37:32.000]  see something about the Maya, then they should get something that's fair and balanced.
[01:37:32.000 --> 01:37:35.000]  It should be culturally accurate. It should be historically accurate.
[01:37:35.000 --> 01:37:38.000]  And I say, well, why should it be? It's a work of fiction.
[01:37:38.000 --> 01:37:40.000]  It's not presented as a work of history.
[01:37:40.000 --> 01:37:43.000]  You call them a Mayanist.
[01:37:43.000 --> 01:37:46.000]  I mean, who are the groups that just think they're the best things in sliced bread
[01:37:46.000 --> 01:37:49.000]  and that you can almost worship the whole Maya system,
[01:37:49.000 --> 01:37:53.000]  and they get these other academics who get really mad and almost act like
[01:37:53.000 --> 01:38:00.000]  that you're not even holy enough about myself to even try to discuss it.
[01:38:00.000 --> 01:38:03.000]  Well, first of all, a lot of these people are my friends.
[01:38:03.000 --> 01:38:07.000]  I've been in the field long enough that I know an awful lot of people in the field.
[01:38:07.000 --> 01:38:11.000]  And they aren't monolithic in their views about apocalypto.
[01:38:11.000 --> 01:38:15.000]  I mean, looking at the debate that went on on this online list that I mentioned to you during the break,
[01:38:15.000 --> 01:38:19.000]  there are a lot of diverse views, and there are some that support.
[01:38:19.000 --> 01:38:22.000]  As I do, Mill Gibson's right to tell a story
[01:38:22.000 --> 01:38:26.000]  and to use whatever narrative devices he chooses to tell that story.
[01:38:26.000 --> 01:38:28.000]  As you mentioned at the beginning of the show,
[01:38:28.000 --> 01:38:34.000]  the core purpose, the core premise of the story is an action adventure with a foot chase in it.
[01:38:34.000 --> 01:38:38.000]  That's what it was conceived at as originally before the Maya were even part of it.
[01:38:38.000 --> 01:38:40.000]  That was the story he wanted to tell.
[01:38:40.000 --> 01:38:44.000]  In fact, it was going to be more of a central or northern North America, right?
[01:38:44.000 --> 01:38:46.000]  That's right. It was going to be more of northern North America,
[01:38:46.000 --> 01:38:48.000]  and I'm not quite sure what led him to the Maya,
[01:38:48.000 --> 01:38:52.000]  but when he did decide on the Maya that he recruited Richard Hanson,
[01:38:52.000 --> 01:38:55.000]  who is a Maya archaeologist living in...
[01:38:55.000 --> 01:38:58.000]  He's affiliated with a project in Washington, D.C.
[01:38:58.000 --> 01:39:03.000]  He works for long periods of the year in Guatemala,
[01:39:03.000 --> 01:39:07.000]  and he's tremendously knowledgeable about my archaeology,
[01:39:07.000 --> 01:39:12.000]  so he was the primary resource on the archaeology and ancient culture.
[01:39:12.000 --> 01:39:17.000]  And then you were the primary resource on getting the language correct?
[01:39:17.000 --> 01:39:19.000]  Actually, I was not.
[01:39:19.000 --> 01:39:23.000]  I was not involved during the production phase in Mexico.
[01:39:23.000 --> 01:39:28.000]  Now, it occurred to me while they were down there to contact them and sign on,
[01:39:28.000 --> 01:39:29.000]  and I might have been able to do it,
[01:39:29.000 --> 01:39:32.000]  but I was just not able to leave Austin for such a long period of time.
[01:39:32.000 --> 01:39:34.000]  Well, just reading press reports.
[01:39:34.000 --> 01:39:37.000]  You were the primary and the post-production.
[01:39:37.000 --> 01:39:40.000]  That's right. In the post-production, the post-production.
[01:39:40.000 --> 01:39:43.000]  That's what I meant, making sure that it was all correct.
[01:39:43.000 --> 01:39:46.000]  And I was working with a young Yucatec man named Nikolas Pot,
[01:39:46.000 --> 01:39:50.000]  and he lives in Los Angeles along with a couple of his brothers,
[01:39:50.000 --> 01:39:53.000]  and there's a lot of other Yucatec speakers living in LA as well.
[01:39:53.000 --> 01:39:55.000]  And he and I collaborated together.
[01:39:55.000 --> 01:39:59.000]  I would say that he and I were the team that gave them what they needed,
[01:39:59.000 --> 01:40:01.000]  their post-production support.
[01:40:01.000 --> 01:40:08.000]  Now, when you're down in Mexico, you see the Mayan folks.
[01:40:08.000 --> 01:40:09.000]  They look just like the folks in the movie,
[01:40:09.000 --> 01:40:12.000]  because Mel went and got a lot of the actual people that are indigenous down there
[01:40:12.000 --> 01:40:14.000]  to be in the film.
[01:40:14.000 --> 01:40:18.000]  The language they speak today,
[01:40:18.000 --> 01:40:24.000]  is that the same Mayan that was being spoken 500 years ago?
[01:40:24.000 --> 01:40:27.000]  Pretty close. It depends where you are,
[01:40:27.000 --> 01:40:30.000]  but in Yucatán, the language that was spoken 500 years ago
[01:40:30.000 --> 01:40:33.000]  was probably no more different from modern Maya
[01:40:33.000 --> 01:40:36.000]  than the English that was spoken 500 years ago is from modern English.
[01:40:36.000 --> 01:40:40.000]  It would differ primarily in terms of the vocabulary.
[01:40:40.000 --> 01:40:43.000]  There would be a lot of vocabulary that we have in modern English,
[01:40:43.000 --> 01:40:46.000]  which would not have been an English of 500 years ago.
[01:40:46.000 --> 01:40:47.000]  Like gun.
[01:40:47.000 --> 01:40:48.000]  Well, or computer.
[01:40:48.000 --> 01:40:53.000]  Well, for them, I meant like the Mayan would never work for gun or sailing ship.
[01:40:53.000 --> 01:40:56.000]  That's right, but they borrowed words they did have,
[01:40:56.000 --> 01:40:58.000]  and they adapted them to new things.
[01:40:58.000 --> 01:41:00.000]  So it's kind of like English grows.

[01:41:01.000 --> 01:41:02.000]  Languages all grow the same way.
[01:41:02.000 --> 01:41:04.000]  There's a lot of universals across.
[01:41:04.000 --> 01:41:07.000]  It has to do with the way we're hardwired as human beings,
[01:41:07.000 --> 01:41:10.000]  the way in which language evolves.
[01:41:10.000 --> 01:41:14.000]  How much evidence is there that there was trading between Asia and the Mayan culture?
[01:41:14.000 --> 01:41:16.000]  Because, you know, when you're down there,
[01:41:16.000 --> 01:41:18.000]  a lot of the places that archaeologists or guys will say,
[01:41:18.000 --> 01:41:20.000]  we have Jade that's only in Asia.
[01:41:20.000 --> 01:41:23.000]  You know, here at Tulum, the ships came in.
[01:41:23.000 --> 01:41:28.000]  It's not entirely, it's certainly not impossible.
[01:41:28.000 --> 01:41:32.000]  And there are people that are very interested in trans-oceanic contact.
[01:41:32.000 --> 01:41:34.000]  As far as regular trade back and forth,
[01:41:34.000 --> 01:41:36.000]  I don't think there's much evidence of it.
[01:41:36.000 --> 01:41:39.000]  But I mean, that's a whole other story too.
[01:41:39.000 --> 01:41:44.000]  It's just a win-win other ancient people made landfall in the Americas.
[01:41:44.000 --> 01:41:48.000]  And there's certainly some evidence that a Chinese expedition got to the west coast of the U.S.

[01:41:54.000 --> 01:41:56.000]  So, yeah, I mean, there is this kind of, definitely,

[01:41:59.000 --> 01:42:04.000]  But as far as the Maya and other ancient people being regularly engaged in trans-oceanic trade,
[01:42:04.000 --> 01:42:09.000]  I don't think it's really, you know, we don't have any significant evidence of that.
[01:42:09.000 --> 01:42:14.000]  Nor any evidence that they interbred with Chinese people.
[01:42:14.000 --> 01:42:18.000]  I mean, they have Mongolian-type features because the best evidence is that
[01:42:18.000 --> 01:42:21.000]  they came over across the Bering Strait exactly over thousands of years.
[01:42:21.000 --> 01:42:24.000]  Well, they have the Mongolian spots too.
[01:42:24.000 --> 01:42:27.000]  The children that, you know, that you see in Asians,
[01:42:27.000 --> 01:42:30.000]  the purple spots that CPS think the children have been beaten,
[01:42:30.000 --> 01:42:33.000]  but no Asians get purple spots on their backs on their babies.
[01:42:33.000 --> 01:42:38.000]  I'm telling CPS workers out there stop grabbing the Asian people and the Mexicans' kids

[01:42:40.000 --> 01:42:44.000]  And now, here's an interesting little sideline that might be worth chasing at some point.

[01:43:39.000 --> 01:43:45.000]  They've been written larger than life in order to create empathy with and interest in those people

[01:49:19.000 --> 01:49:21.000]  Did they kill the winner or the loser?
[01:49:21.000 --> 01:49:22.000]  What's the truth?
[01:49:22.000 --> 01:49:25.000]  Well, I think the evidence really strongly points to the fact

[01:49:27.000 --> 01:49:31.000]  The idea of killing the winners and people playing the wins
[01:49:31.000 --> 01:49:34.000]  so that they can be nobly sacrificed is kind of a fascinating idea,

[01:49:37.000 --> 01:49:41.000]  But nonetheless, there's a lot of evidence of human sacrifice at Chichen Itza.
[01:49:41.000 --> 01:49:46.000]  Both sacrifice of ball players, you may have seen the scenes on the sides of the ball court
[01:49:46.000 --> 01:49:51.000]  where a ball player is kneeling and his head is being chopped off.
[01:49:51.000 --> 01:49:53.000]  In fact, his head has just been chopped off.
[01:49:53.000 --> 01:49:57.000]  And then the other ball player, the winner, is holding the decapitated head
[01:49:57.000 --> 01:50:03.000]  and out of the cut neck spurred seven serpents and a vine.
[01:50:03.000 --> 01:50:08.000]  So there's a lot of real mystical, magical rebirth stuff going on there.
[01:50:08.000 --> 01:50:09.000]  What about 2012?
[01:50:09.000 --> 01:50:12.000]  I mean, the nuts are getting ready to go crazy on that date.
[01:50:12.000 --> 01:50:14.000]  Oh, it's the end of the world.
[01:50:14.000 --> 01:50:17.000]  But you're able to actually read the real calendar.
[01:50:17.000 --> 01:50:19.000]  You can read the original language.
[01:50:19.000 --> 01:50:21.000]  What does it actually say?
[01:50:21.000 --> 01:50:25.000]  Well, what I have access to, and I've actually been involved in deciphering it,

[01:50:27.000 --> 01:50:32.000]  is the last time this came around, which was back in 3113 B.C.

[01:50:47.000 --> 01:50:51.000]  but what we're talking about is the great cycle of what they call the long count.

[01:50:53.000 --> 01:50:57.000]  And in that phrase, for the last time this event happened,

[01:51:12.000 --> 01:51:16.000]  Now, they're telling us a whole lot about what really happened there,
[01:51:16.000 --> 01:51:19.000]  and we get a lot of history from before that event.
[01:51:19.000 --> 01:51:25.000]  A lot of these monumental texts tell us about the actions of deities before this event took place.
[01:51:25.000 --> 01:51:29.000]  So they clearly believe that there was a before and after.
[01:51:29.000 --> 01:51:33.000]  And I see no reason to think there's not going to be a before and after in this situation.
[01:51:33.000 --> 01:51:36.000]  So even if people believe in their religion today,
[01:51:36.000 --> 01:51:41.000]  or have got some new age concoction from it,
[01:51:41.000 --> 01:51:44.000]  it doesn't really say the planet blows up.
[01:51:44.000 --> 01:51:46.000]  Nothing like that.
[01:51:46.000 --> 01:51:51.000]  In fact, there are ancient Maya monuments that cast forward into our times and beyond.
[01:51:51.000 --> 01:51:54.000]  And then they get clear that they expect things to carry on.
[01:51:54.000 --> 01:51:56.000]  The only thing they really say about it, and again,
[01:51:56.000 --> 01:51:59.000]  I've been very much involved in deciphering this,
[01:51:59.000 --> 01:52:03.000]  is that they expect to be able to keep the gods happy.
[01:52:03.000 --> 01:52:09.000]  How many of the professors and academics you work with are into this now and believe it?
[01:52:09.000 --> 01:52:12.000]  Into what stuff? The 2012 stuff, the new age stuff?
[01:52:12.000 --> 01:52:16.000]  I mean, so for the most part, everybody disbelieves it.
[01:52:16.000 --> 01:52:19.000]  But I think that I'm one of the few who's really explored it.
