<l>Fait ſuccéder la peur, sans ceſſe, à l'eſpérance.</l>
<l>Plaire à l'objet que j'aime, & me voir ſon époux,</l>
<l>Offre à mon coeur ſenſible un triomphe bien doux ;</l>
<l>Mais la crainte de perdre un bien ſi plein de charmes,</l>

<l>Accablent, à leur tour, mon ame épouvantée.</l>
<l>Je crains, de deux côtés, d'avoir un ſort fâcheux ;</l>
<l>D'être Amant traverſé, comme Auteur malheureux :</l>
<l>Le public qu'on ennuye, eſt un Juge ſévére ;</l>

<l>D'ouïr hurler des chiens, & crier des chouettes,</l>
<l>De rencontrer le jour des Créanciers fâcheux ;</l>
<l>Sçachés que cette nuit j'ai fait un rêve affreux:</l>
<l>J'ai ſongé que j'allois m'unir avec <name type="person" n="Hortense">Hortenſe</name></l>
<l>Dans le temps que vers elle un inconnu s'avance,</l>
<l>L'arrache de mes bras, & l'enleve à mes yeux </l>
<l>Sur un char que traînoient deux taureaux furieux :</l>
<l>Je veux les arrêter dans leur courſe fougueuſe,</l>
<l>Quand je tombe au milieu d'une eau ſale & bour-<lb/>beuse.</l>
<l>Mille confus objets troublent alors mes ſens ;</l>
<l>Je prens du poiſſon mort, je ſens tomber mes dents ;</l>
<l>J'ai vû mon Procureur boire avec ma Partie,</l>
<l>Puis j'ai vû tout-à-coup jouer ma Comédie :</l>
<l>Le Parterre à mes yeux, les Loges, n'ont offert</l>
<l>Qu'un grand vuide effroyable, & qu'un vaſte deſert;</l>
<l>Des luſtres preſque éteints, la lueur ſombre & pâle</l>
<l>Éclairoit triſtement la moitié de la ſale ;</l>
<l>Tout le fond du Théâtre étoit tendu de noir,</l>
<l>Et formoit un ſpectacle épouventable à voir.</l>
<l>Je tremble, et je veux fuir à cet objet terrible;</l>
<l>Mais je ſuis arrêté par un bras inviſible :</l>
<l>Pour comble de terreur , cent voix , en même-tems,</l>
<l>Pouſſent autour de moi d'horribles hurlemens ;</l>
<l>Sur ma tête j'entens le tonnerre qui roule ;</l>
<l>Sous les pieds des Acteurs le Théâtre s'écroule !</l>
<l>Les luſtres, à l'inſtant, s'éteignent tout-à-fait,</l>
<l>Et mon ſonge finit par trois coups de ſifflet.</l>

<l>Je penſe, comme vous, qu'il eſt honteux de l'être ;</l>
<l>Ma raiſon me le dit, mais elle perd ſes ſoins :</l>
<l>J'en ſens le ridicule, & ne le ſuis pas moins.</l>
<l>Contre les préjugés en vain o<sic>u</sic><corr>n</corr> se rebelle :</l>
<l>La ſuperſtition à l'homme eſt naturelle ;</l>
<l>Et le hazard malin , pour la fortifier ,</l>
<l>Se plaît inceſſamment à la justifier.</l>
<l>Je l'ai trop éprouvé dans plus d'une occurence ;</l>
<l>La raiſon ne tient pas contre l'expérience ;</l>
<l>Et votre cur, peut-être, auroit le même effroi,</l>
<l>Si vous étiez, Monſieur, ſur le point comme moi,</l>
<l>D'attirer du Public la louange ou le blâme,</l>
