ECMC 9.6.8

  • Change lookup table support to be defined in EGUs:
Cfg.LoadAxisEncLookupTable(int axis_no,char *filename)

Add PLC function libs:

Add possability to load function library to a plc object:

The functions must be defined accordning to template:

  • For syntax of the "code body", check the exprtk website.
  • Several functions can be defined in the same file.
  • The parameters aswell as the return value must be scalars, however, local vectors can be defined and used in calculations (initiations of vector can be done with MACROS, constants or parameters).
  • "#" as a first char in a line is considered a comment (the line will be removed before compile).
  • MSI: The lib file will be parsed through MSI allowing macro expansion, "include" and "subsitute" commands. For more info check the msi documentation/help.

  6. Vectors as parameter or return value (only first value will be passed).

Axis groups

Added support for grouping axes

Groups are configured by the following commands:

  1. Add an group : "Cfg.AddAxisGroup(groupName)"
  2. Add an axis to a group by group name : "Cfg.AddAxisToGroupByName(axisIndex,groupName)"
  3. Add an axis to a group by group index :"Cfg.AddAxisToGroupByIndex(axisIndex,groupIndex)"
  4. Read group index by group name : "GetAxisGroupIndexByName(groupName)"

PLC interface

1.  mc_grp_get_enable(
                     <grp_id>,         : Group index

   Returns true if all axes in the group have the enable bit set, else false.
   Note: The axes do not need to be enabled if this function returns true, see mc_grp_get_enabled().

Add iocsh command for if statements:

  1. ecmcIf(<expression>,<optional true macro>,<optional false macro>)
  2. ecmcEndIf(<optional true macro>,<optional false macro>)

ecmcIf(<expression>,<optional true macro>,<optional false macro>)

ecmcIf() set two macros depending on the value of the evaluated expression. If it evaluates to true:

  1. IF_TRUE="" Allows execution of a line of code
  2. IF_FALSE= "#-" Block execution of a line of code

If expression evaluates to false:

  1. IF_TRUE="#-" Block execution of a line of code
  2. IF_FALSE= "" Allows execution of a line of code

Note: These macros is the default names for the macros (but can be changed by assignment of the 2 last params in call to ecmcIf()):

  1. IF_TRUE for true
  2. IF_FALSE for false

ecmcEndIf(<optional true macro>,<optional false macro>)

The ecmcEndIf() command unsets the last used macros (for true and false), if differnt names are passed as arguments then then these macros are unset (for nested if statements).

Example of of syntax

Example 1:

Update of encoder handling

  • Add asyn parameter to select primary encoder (for control). This parameter will also set the index of homing encoder.
ax<id>.primencid
  • The axis actpos and actvel always shows values based on the primary encoder.
  • The axis actpos01..08, actvel01..08 shows the individual encoder values.
  • Remove concept with homing encoder. The homing encoder is always the primary encoder.
  • Add asyn param to switch encoder

The update is done in order to make it simpler to for instance switch between open loop and closed loop for steppers.

Allow several domains:

Add domain: All entries configured after this call will belong to th new domain:

The domain can be configured to execute at slower rates than the default ec rate and with offsets.

The domain can be configured to be allowd to be offline:

Note: If the domain is offline, ecmc will start even if the slaves in the domain are not connected to the bus.

Note: Axes which are using data from a domain will be interlocked if the domain status is not OK.

The ecmccfg commands addDomain.cmd wraps this functionality:

addDomain.cmd "ALLOW_OFFLINE=<allow>, EXE_RATE=<rate>,EXE_OFFSET=<offset>"

All parameters are optional.

A new plc function is added to allow supervision of the domain states:

ec_get_dom_state(<dom_index>)

master 2 master communication:

By default a buffer of 128 doubles can be used for communication between different masters by plc functions:

m2m_write(<index>,<value>)     : write a value to an index in the buffer (index must be 0..119)
m2m_read(<index>)              : read a value at an index in the buffer (index must be 0..119)
m2m_stat()                     : check that connection to memory is ok.
m2m_err_rst()                  : reset any error
m2m_get_err()                  : get error code
m2m_ioc_ec_ok(<master_index>)  : ioc/master ethercat status ok/operational. 1==op, 0==not op, -1==error
m2m_ioc_run(<master_index>)    : ioc/master running (negative master id is ioc:s without ec master)

Add extra set of controller parameters

Use different controller parameters depending on distance to target. This can be usefull in for instance systemes with backlash.

The command to configure this is:

"Cfg.SetAxisCntrlInnerParams(axis_no, kp, ki, kd, tol);

If distance to target is within +-tol then these controlelr parameters will be used.

In ecmccfg-jinja, the configuration looks like below (the inner section):

ECMC 9.0.0

  • Fixes to brake control

Add support for reading and writing SDO:s in runtime

The "Cfg.EcAddSdoAsync()" can be used to add a SDO to be read or written dunring runtime:

The command generates 5 asyn parameters:

Process to write data

  1. Write data to PV linked to "ec.s.sdo..value"
  2. Ensure there is a positive edge on the PV linked to "ec.s.sdo..writecmd"
  3. Check for errors in PV linked to ec.s.sdo..error

Process to read data

  1. Ensure there is a positive edge on the PV linked to "ec.s.sdo..readcmd"
  2. Check for errors in PV linked to ec.s.sdo..error
  3. Read data from PV linked to "ec.s.sdo..value"

ecmccfg command addEcSdoRT.cmd

The "addEcSdoRT.cmd" ecmccfg comand can be used to register a async SDO and generate PVs. Example for drive voltage setting if an EL7031 drive:

Multi encoder support

General

Support for multiple encoders for axis objects added, max 8 encoders/axis. The follwing commands added to ecmc:

* "Cfg.AddAxisEnc(${ECMC_AXIS_NO})"
* "Cfg.SelectAxisEncPrimary($(ECMC_AXIS_NO),${ECMC_ENC_PRIMARY_ID=-1})"
* "Cfg.SelectAxisEncHome($(ECMC_AXIS_NO),${ECMC_ENC_HOME_ID=-1})"
* "Cfg.SelectAxisEncConfig($(ECMC_AXIS_NO),${ECMC_ENC_CFG_ID=-1})"
* "GetAxisEncConfigIndex($(ECMC_AXIS_NO))"
* "Cfg.SetAxisEncRefToOtherEncAtStartup($(ECMC_AXIS_NO),${ECMC_ENC_REF_TO_ENC_AT_STARTUP_ID=-1})"
* "Cfg.SetAxisEncEnableRefAtHome($(ECMC_AXIS_NO),${ECMC_ENC_REF_AT_HOME=-1})"

The Cfg.CreateAxis() command will create one encoder with index 0, backwards compatible. This encoder is the default the encoder used for control (primary encoder) and also the encoder used during the defined homing sequence, if any. If an extra encoder is needed the Cfg.AddAxisEnc() can be executed. After an execution of Cfg.AddAxisEnc() all following encoder confguration commands will be applied to the newest encoder. If configuration of another encoder is needed then the "Cfg.SelectAxisEncConfig()" command can be used to switch the encoder being configured.

Control

The primary encoder,used for control can be changed with the command "Cfg.SelectAxisEncPrimary()", defaults to encoder index 0:

Example: Set encoder with index 2 (the third encoder) to primary encoder for axis 1

Homing / referencing

The encoder used for homing can be defined with the command "Cfg.SelectAxisEncHome()", defaults to encoder index 0.

If the primary and homing encoder are not the same, then during homing a tempoerarty swicth of encoder will occur. This can result in a step in actual position value. After homing control will be switched back to the primnary encoder.

Example: Use encoder with index 3 for homing of axis 1

Encoders can be referenced to the value of antother encoder at startup. Could be usefull if one encoder is absolute and one is incremental, to refernce the incremnetal to the value of the absolute encoder. This nfeature is configured by the "Cfg.SetAxisEncRefToOtherEncAtStartup()" command.

Example: Reference encoder 2 to the value of encoder 1 for axis 3

# Select encoder to configure

Encoders can also be referenced to the value of other encoders after a successful homing sequence (of any encoder). This feature can be enabled by the "Cfg.SetAxisEncEnableRefAtHome()" command:

Example: Allow referencing of encoder 1 after successfull homing axis 3

Monitoring

The difference between each encoder and the primary encoder can be monitored by setting the maximum allowd difference with the "Cfg.SetAxisEncMaxDiffToPrimEnc()" command. Monitoring will only be executed between encoders being homed. If the deviation is higher than defined, the axis will be interlocked and thereby stopped.

Example: Allow a maximum difference of 0.1 between encoder 2 and the primary encoder for axis 4:

Migration guide (6.x.x to 7.0.0)

Version 7 of ecmc and ecmccfg is intended to be more flexible in PV naming making it possible to follow for instance the ESS naming standard. At the same time a more systematic/genric approach to naming have been implemneted making use of macros easier. Because of these changes v7 is not compatible with v6. The last version of ecmc and ecmccfg with the old naming is v6.3.3.

What have changed

The changes are described in detail in this file: Naming Convention

These changes will mainly affect:

  1. Default ecmc PV names
  2. ecmc parameter names

1. PV names

Updated PV names affects:

  1. Local databases accesing data from ecmc PV:s
  2. OPIs accessing data from ecmc PVs
  3. Archiving configuration

Drive and Encoder Alarms, Warning and reset linked to motor record

Since ecmc 6.3.3 the follwing can be linked to the motion axis:

  • 3 drive hardware alarms
  • 1 drive reset error bit
  • 1 drive warning bit
  • 3 encoder hardware alarms
  • 1 encoder reset error bit
  • 1 encoder warning bit

Alarms:

If any of the alarm bits is going high the axis will stop and and an alarm meassage will be propagated to motor record (if used).

Reset:

The reset bit is linked to the motor record reset PV (a reset from motor reset pv will result in reset toggle for 1 scan).

Warning:

The warning bit will at the moment just result in a printout in the iocsh log. Several drives, like el7037, are in warning state when not enabled.

Variables:

In order to use the new alarm and reset functionality some new varaibles need to be set in the motion configuration files.

  • Allow plc:s to write to axis as default.

  • Increase max allowed datastorage count to 32

  • Increase max allowed plc count to 16

  • Add alarm and reset links to axis encoder and drive object (that can be assigned with the "Cfg.LinkEcEntryToObject()"-command):

    The intention with these links is to link drive and encoder related errors and reset commads to interlock motion and display alarms in axis error field. For an EL7037 the following bits could be mapped:

    • ax.drv.reset to ec.s.STM_CONTROL.1 // Reset bit in drive control word.
    • ax.drv.alarm0 to ec.s.STM_STATUS.3 // Error bit in drive status word.
    • ax.drv.alarm1 to ec.s.STM_STATUS.7 // Stall bit drive status word.
    • ax.drv.alarm2 to ec.s.STM_STATUS.14 // Sync error bit drive status word.
    • ax.drv.warning to ec.s.STM_STATUS.2 // Warning bit drive status word.

    If the reset link is defined then this bit will be set for one cycle when issueing an error reset command. Note: Any of these new links can be left unused/blank.

  • Add plc function mc_home_pos(): Reference encoder to a postion (same as mc_home but with an extra argument for position, so no need to set home position with ax.enc.homepos).

  • Add plc function mc_move_ext_pos(): Plc function will move axis to the current external plc setpoint. Inteded to be used to move a slave axis to it's start position before allowing external setpoints.

  • Add variables:

    • ax.enc.extactpos (ro): Current external plc calculated actual position (ax.enc.actpos can be used for writing).
    • ax.traj.extsetpos (ro): Current external plc calculated setpoint position(ax.enc.setpos can be used for writing).
  • Position setpoint is syncronized with actual position when axis is disabled. Setpoint is updated once at positive edge of enable command. Note: The position setpoint is synced with actual position before first enable.

ECMC 6.3.2

  • Add command to enable/disable motion functions (all are by default enabled):

Allow running without EtherCAT hardware

Add possibility to run without attached ethercat hardware. Most functionalities are still available:

  • motion (most likely to use virtual axes, but also normal axis can be used).

Note: When running without ethercat hardware you should not execute the "Cfg.EcSetMaster()" command.

Add iocsh command to exit

Add ecmcExit() to exit EPICS/ECMC (needed since the iocsh command "exit" just stops reading current "file"). Can be used for stopping execution when a configuration error occurs.

  Use "ecmcExit" to exit ecmc/EPICS.
  Use "ecmcExit -h | --help" to get help message.

Add iocsh command to execute for loop

Usefull for:

  • Large systems with many similar sub systems
  • Configuring hardware with many PDOs (oversampling)

ecmcConfig(OrDie) result to epics environment variable

The return value from ecmcConfig(OrDie) is stored in the EPICS environment variable "ECMC_CONFIG_RETURN_VAL". This value can be used to make som dynamic configuration. All ASCII configuration commands for ecmcConfig(OrDie) can be used in the same way.

    Two commands have been added for this functionallity:

    1. "Cfg.SetAxisMonLatchLimit(<axis_no>,)"
    2. "GetAxisMonLatchLimit(<axis_no>)"

    Currentlly it's a bit unclear how this will affect syncronized axes. If issues then the functionality can be disabled of with: "Cfg.SetAxisMonLatchLimit(<axis_no>, 0)"

  • Make cmd parser more effichent (runtime commands eval first).

  • Change ecmc_rt thread default prio to from 60 to 72.

  • Clean up in axis sub objects:
    • emcmMonitor: Add verify setpoint function (mostly rename)
    • ecmcTrajectory: Make more independent of other code
  • Implementation of robot and hexapod kinematics? How to do best possible?
  • Make possible to add ethercat hardware on the fly (hard, seems EPICS do not support dynamic load of records)
  • Only stop motion when the slaves used by axis are in error state or not reachable.
  • Test EtherCAT redundancy
  • Add possibility to link axis functionality to plcs (right now for instance a limit needs to be an EtherCAT entry).
