Reason for changing parent term:
To better describe the current understanding of ECM components and compartments.
We propose to keep the extracellular matrix parent term currently referring to the metazoan ECM as the generic physiological "cellular compartment" based on GO's terminology. The extracellular matrix exists in three forms, each form is comprised of different molecules: the Interstitial matrix (GO:0005614), the Basement membrane (GO:0005604), and a compartment that is located at the interface of the interstitial matrix and the basement membrane.

Add new terms as child terms
Add new child terms for Basement membrane (GO: 0005604)
To reflect the different compartments found within the ECM and align with the GO CC terminology.
The collagenous and non-collagenous compartments of ECMs have distinct function and components. We kept the original idea of separating these compartments but propose to add more systematic annotations of the different compartments of the different types of ECMs. We are also obsoleting the term Collagen-containing extracellular matrix (GO:0062023) (#29475)
