Provide a clear and concise overview of the new feature requested.

HEMCO's implementation of GFED and GFED climatology has no vertical allocation. GFED has comments indicating that placeholders exist for this allocation.[1] Based on a quick review of the comments, the vertical allocation is based on the one implemented for QFED via HEMCO configuration via xyL=1:PBL and xyL=PBL:5500m.[2-3] Similarly, the GFED climatology is emitted at the surface (i.e, xy)[4].

At iGC11, the emissions working group discussed that adding a vertical allocation for GFED this would be a good step forward. I'm adding this issue to document the discussion. Perhaps, the emission working group cochairs can chime in.

Thanks for pointing this out @barronh.

One simple way to achieve vertical allocation of GFED emissions would be to run the HEMCO standalone and archive GFED biomass burning emissions at up to 0.25x0.3125 resolution. The total emissions could then be directly read in HEMCO_Config.rc allowing us to apply the vertical distribution in the exact same way we do for QFED. We can also update the GFED climatology entries in HEMCO_Config.rc to utilize those scale factors.

Also tagging @eamarais and and @jaegle for input.

@barronh, @msulprizio's recommendation seems like a reasonable way forward.

@msulprizio, is this something that the GCST can do, or should it be included as a recommended set of steps for users wanting injection heights in GFED?
