[These] updates were spurred by the ongoing Multi-Compartment Hg Modeling and Analysis Project (MCHgMAP), which is conducting an intercomparison of four separate Hg models (preprint: Both proposed updates were spurred by the ongoing Multi-Compartment Hg Modeling and Analysis Project (MCHgMAP), which is conducting an intercomparison of four separate Hg models (preprint: https://doi.org/10.5194/gmd-2024-65). A brief discussion of the inventories in both updates is included below.

Hg geogenic emissions:

-Volcanic emissions: Spatially and temporally distributed sources are estimated using SO2 and CO2 inventories and 14 available observationally derived emission factors.
-Rock weathering: Total emissions are constrained by estimate of Li et al. (2020) and distributed spatially to known mercury mineral belts.
-Spatial resolution: 0.25 x 0.25 degrees (much higher than previous natural emission dataset (newnatural.geos.4x5.nc))
-Temporal resolution: 11 annual files (2010-2020)

Hg biomass burning emissions:

  • Hg emission factors based on recent observational constraints instead of existing Hg:CO scaling factor.
  • Hg emissions now have 90:10 speciation between gaseous elemental mercury and particulate oxidized mercury, respectively.
  • Emission factors applied to GFED4s (van der Werf et al., 2017) and FINN2.5 (Weidinmyer et al., 2023)
  • Spatial resolution: 0.25 x 0.25 degrees
  • Temporal resolution: Daily

All noted datasets exist and are COARDS compliant. In both cases, the only required code adjustment is the addition of respective switches in the HEMCO_Config.rc file.

Will you be implementing this feature yourself?

Yes, but I will need some help

Additional information

Eric Roy will submit a PR with the HEMCO config file updates and also point us to an FTP site where we can download the data files.
