It appears that fields defined as "number" in CartoDB GUI come as String in QGIS when the records include "null" as a value. If there are no nulls in a numeric field, then the plugin recognizes the data type correctly.
It seems you left a note in CartoDBPluginLayer.py alluding to this issue, so perhaps you already had planned on fixing this at a later version.

Yes, QGis gets null fields like strings, but I hasn't found a method for assign this validation. I will continue looking into the QGIS's documentation.
