...or at the very least channels with Japanese characters in them. For example, if I try to join #日本語 on euirc, I get the following:

Is that an actual problem or am I just doing something dumb?

Try double quoting the channel name: JOIN "#channel".

Oh there you go! Yes, that works.
Is that "working as intended"? I wouldn't really expect to need quotes unless I've got spaces in there or something.

Something in the Unicode pattern makes the argument parser think it's not a single argument but two. Not sure why so it's a bug somewhere.
