After finding a pretty good projection basis (maybe after search_geodesic), write a function that can

  • sample many directions, and then
  • find the global maximum

This is similar to a search_better(), but more for after knowing the approx location of the global maximum. Any point around nearby should lead to finding of the peak.

Based on the newly simulated data, different stepSs are giving very similar ending index_val (see 2-alpha_analysis) - wonder if it is necessary to construct search_polish()
