Description

The current HM Redirects plugin is a holdover from the WordPress.com VIP days when no other tables were allowed. There are better options out there with better usability and features, that with a little work could be made suitable for enterprise.

The current HM Agency recommendation is the Redirection plugin:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/redirection/

This would require 2 main pieces:

  • Switching to the new plugin
  • Creating a migration script from HM Redirects, and hooking that up to the wp altis-migrate command
  • Optional, migration script from Yoast SEO redirects

Acceptance Criteria

  • Determine if John Godley's Redirection plugin for redirects provides significant improvement and document them or if we need to improve on the existing hm-redirects plugin instead.
  • Determine the upgrade path.
  • Get feedback from the team based on findings
  • Create an issue to implement the switch to John Godley's Redirection plugin if found significantly better.

Don't mind switching if there's significantly better solutions, but we need to be careful about the migration here and ensure it's not lossy; one difficulty with the various redirection plugins is that the way redirections work is slightly different across the various plugins (e.g. query args, etc), so we'd need to make sure that's all retained
