Guide:DOS games in DOSBox‐X

This guide explains how to setup and play DOS games in DOSBox-X.
There are several ways you can run a DOS game inside DOSBox-X.
If you use Windows, you can launch a DOS game on your computer easily using the "quick launch" feature. When DOSBox-X is running, select the "DOS" menu and click "Quick launch program…", then you will be able to select a game to run using the Windows file browser. The game directory will be automatically mounted and the game will be started after you select a game executable on your computer.
If you installed DOSBox-X 0.83.5 or later using the Windows installer, you can also launch a DOS game directly from the Windows Explorer, even if DOSBox-X is not currently running. Right click the executable of your DOS game and select "Open with DOSBox-X". Then DOSBox-X will be started and automatically run the game you just selected.
Otherwise, you can manually run the DOS game from the DOSBox-X command line. Now start DOSBox-X. By default there is no drive mounted other than the internal virtual drive Z:. You need to mount the game directory so that it can be seen from within DOSBox-X. You can either mount a drive from the Drive menu, or by typing a command like the following:
MOUNT C C:\GAME
Change C:\GAME
to your actual game directory. After you type Enter, the following message will be displayed:
Drive C mounted as local directory C:\GAME\
To dissect the above:
MOUNT: Tells the program to mount a directory C: Tells the program what you want your new drive to be called (leaving it as C: is fine) C:\GAME: This is the directory you want to set as the new drive for DOSBox-X. If your game is located in a different directory, then replace it with that directory. (Note: If you want to mount a CD-ROM instead of a folder, type this:
MOUNT D D:\ -T CDROM
The following message will be displayed:
MSCDEX installed. Drive D is mounted as CDRom D:\
In this example, D:\ -T CDROM
tells DOSBox-X that my D:\ drive is a CD-ROM drive, and the first D, tells DOSBox-X what my new drive name should be called. If you are running your game off a CD-ROM then make sure to use D: in place of C: in the following examples. You can find instructions on how to mount other devices, such as floppy drives, in the mount section).
After you have done this, you will be prompted with a Z:\>. Now, just write what you wanted to call your new DOSBox-X drive, such as C: mentioned above. To navigate to that newly mounted drive just type in:
C:
The drive will be changed from Z:\ to C:\. And it is now time to run the game. Most games have an EXE file in their directory that you can run. However, some might require a BAT file, or COM file (common in demos and really old games). Most of the time, the file is in the root folder. Please consult the documentation of your game for which file is needed to start the game. Suppose the game executable is called PLAY.EXE, then you can just type this:
PLAY.EXE
That’s it! You can now enjoy the game.
CD-ROM: The game can’t find its CD-ROM.
If your mounting a host folder as CD-ROM, or if (on Windows) your want to
mount your real CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive for use in DOSBox-X, be sure to
mount the CD-ROM with the -t cdrom
switch. This will enable the
MSCDEX interface required by DOS games to interface with CD-ROMs.
Also try adding the correct label (-label LABEL
) to the mount command,
where LABEL is the CD-label (volume ID) of the CD-ROM.
Alternatively, try creating a CD-ROM image (ISO or CUE/BIN pair) and use DOSBox-X’s internal IMGMOUNT tool to mount the image. If the CD contains multiple tracks, such as redbook audio, you need to use the CUE/BIN format. This enables very good low-level CD-ROM support on any operating system.
MOUSE: The mouse doesn’t work.
By default mouse autolock is disabled in the DOSBox-X config file. You can either
edit the config file and in the [SDL]
section, set autolock=true
.
Or you can go to the "Main" menu and select "Capture mouse". If DOSBox-X detects
when a program uses PS/2 mouse control and autolock is enabled, when you click on
the screen it should get locked (confined to the DOSBox-X window) and work.
Alternatively you can press Left-CTRL F10 to lock and unlock the mouse.
SOUND: There is no sound.
Be sure that the sound is correctly configured in the game. This might be done during the installation or with a setup/setsound utility that accompanies the game. First see if an autodetection option is provided. If there is none try selecting SoundBlaster or SoundBlaster 16 with the default settings being "address=220 irq=7 dma=1" (sometimes highdma=5). You might also want to select Sound Canvas/SCC/MPU-401/General MIDI/Wave Blaster at "address=330 IRQ=2" as music device.
The parameters of the emulated sound cards can be changed in the DOSBox-X configuration file (dosbox-x.conf by default).
If you still don’t get any sound set the core to normal in DOSBox-X
configuration and use some lower fixed cycles value (like cycles=2000). Also
assure that your host operating sound does provide sound.
In certain cases it might be useful to use a different emulated sound device
like a SoundBlaster Pro (sbtype=sbpro1
in the DOSBox-X configuration file) or
the Gravis Ultrasound (gus=true
).
SOUND: What sound hardware does DOSBox-X presently emulate?
DOSBox-X emulates several legacy sound devices:

Internal PC speaker/Buzzer
This emulation includes both the tone generator and several forms of digital sound output through the internal speaker.

Creative CMS/Gameblaster
The is the first card released by Creative Labs®. The default configuration places it on address 220. It is disabled by default.

Tandy 3 voice
The emulation of this sound hardware is complete with the exception of the noise channel. The noise channel is not very well documented and as such is only a best guess as to the sound’s accuracy. It is disabled as default.

Tandy DAC
Some games may require turning off SoundBlaster emulation (sbtype=none
)
for better Tandy DAC sound support. Don’t forget to set the sbtype back to
sb16 if you don’t use Tandy sound.

Adlib
This emulation is almost perfect and includes the Adlib’s ability to almost play digitized sound. Placed at address 220 (also on 388).

SoundBlaster 16 / SoundBlaster Pro I & II / SoundBlaster I & II
By default DOSBox-X provides SoundBlaster 16 level 16-bit stereo sound. You can select a different SoundBlaster version in the configuration of DOSBox-X. AWE32 music is not emulated as you can use MPU-401 instead (see below).

Disney Sound Source and Covox Speech Thing
Using the printer port, this sound device outputs digital sound only. Placed at LPT1

Gravis Ultrasound
The emulation of this hardware is nearly complete, though the MIDI capabilities have been left out, since an MPU-401 has been emulated in other code. For Gravis music you also have to install Gravis drivers inside DOSBox. It is disabled by default.

MPU-401
A MIDI passthrough interface is also emulated. This method of sound output will only work when used with external device/emulator. Every Windows XP/Vista/7 and macOS (Mac OS X) has got a default emulator compatible with: Sound Canvas/SCC/General Standard/General MIDI/Wave Blaster. A different device/emulator is needed for Roland LAPC/CM-32L/MT-32 compatibility.
GENERAL: Running a certain game closes DOSBox-X, crashes with some message or hangs.

use loadfix before starting the game
GENERAL: The game crashes or misbehaves
There can be many reasons that a game crashes or misbehaves. One of the more
common problems with older DOS games, is that they expect not to be loaded
too low in conventional (base) memory. So one of the first things to try is
to run LOADFIX
before running the game. LOADFIX will by default allocate
64kB of RAM. e.g.
LOADFIX GAME.EXE
You can specify a different amount as follows:
LOADFIX -32 GAME.EXE
Will instead allocate 32kB.
If this does not fix the problem, try to search for the game on the following websites for known issues.
Do note that sometimes the information you may find is rather dated, and may no longer be applicable for DOSBox-X.
GENERAL: The game exits to the DOSBox-X prompt with some error message.

check the file permissions of the game files (remove read-only attributes, add write permissions etc.)
