The True Love Update - It’s only mostly dead.

“It just so happens that your friend here is only mostly dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Now, mostly dead is slightly alive.”

— Miracle Max

In 2017, Linde Group announced that we would no longer be updating AutoPkgr and that, unless community members stepped up to help with its development, AutoPkgr would function only until Apple changed something that broke it.

It seems that those who prefer the convenience of the GUI of AutoPkgr (as opposed to those who are comfortable with the CLI of AutoPkg) are precisely the people who don’t have the time and/or skills to further AutoPkgr’s development.

Consequently, since 2017, while AutoPkgr has continued to function and be used by Mac administrators all over the world, it has languished without further updates. Its development has been… mostly dead. Our online communities started to speak of it as “abandonware.”

Is it abandonware? No. Because mostly dead is slightly alive!

SO we’re so happy to be able to make a special announcement today:

We have released AutoPkgr 1.5 - The True Love Update. This update was originally undertaken by our own Shawn Honsberger because he feared that macOS Catalina would spell doom for AutoPkgr. He decided he was not going to allow that to happen.

This release implements Apple’s security requirements for macOS 10.15 compatibility: hardened runtime, complete code signing, Notarization with the Apple Notary Service, and stapling of tickets. We've also added support for the awesome Dark Mode in macOS 10.14+, an easy right-click action for ”Update Trust Info for Override,” and an updated code signing certificate.

The continued development of AutoPkgr is no longer in question. We’ve enjoyed creating and maintaining AutoPkgr, and want to continue to do so with this version. Since Linde Group is an IT consulting firm and we’re not set up to do software development, from time to time we may still turn to the strength of the community for continued development. We’ll continue to control the signing certificate and manage the new version release process as the software is developed.

If you’re interested in contributing to AutoPkgr’s future, please get in touch via e-mail at autopkgr@lindegroup.com or feel free to submit a pull request to our GitHub repo. If you need help with AutoPkgr, please check out the MacAdmins Slack, GitHub, or the AutoPkgr Google Group. We want to thank the amazing AutoPkg/AutoPkgr community for embodying the spirit of helping and taking care of each other.

AutoPkgr 1.5 was and is truly a labor of love. We are so happy that AutoPkgr 1.5 enables macOS administrators everywhere to continue using AutoPkgr.

Happy autopkg-ing! And have fun storming the castle!

Sincerely,

Everyone at Linde Group and especially Shawn (who, you know, did all the actual work)
