If the SDK version is less than the value defined by MA_AAUDIO_MIN_ANDROID_SDK_VERSION, the AAudio backend will be disabled. It will then force the OpenSL backend as a fallback.

This is great, just to confirm, by minimum SDK version, we are talking about the SDK version of the device a runtime, isn't it?
So if the device running the code is below MA_AAUDIO_MIN_ANDROID_SDK_VERSION, then use the OpenSL backend.

The idea is to check it at runtime, yes. If you're curious, there's a function called ma_is_backend_enabled() in the implementation section of miniaudio.h, and for AAudio, it does this check:

return ma_android_sdk_version() >= MA_AAUDIO_MIN_ANDROID_SDK_VERSION;
