Changes required to use this package for other taxonomies instead of us-gaap #83

This is my first time working with XBRLs and have no financial background. The taxonomy I need to work on is not US-gaap but instead, IN-gaap. Can anyone please help me understand or let me know where I should make the changes so I could use it for other taxonomies as well?

Attaching my .xml file as well (git doesn't support uploading .xml so uploading a .txt instead)

I am not sure about how to parse the required column as well, if possible you can use any tags for example.

Hey,

normally you shouldn't have to do any modifications.
The code to parse the (locally stored) file wou provided would be the following:

from xbrl.cache import HttpCache
from xbrl.instance import XbrlParser, XbrlInstance

logging.basicConfig(level=logging.INFO)
cache: HttpCache = HttpCache('./cache')
cache.set_headers({'From': 'your@email.com', 'User-Agent': 'py-xbrl/2.1.1'})

inst: XbrlInstance = xbrlParser.parse_instance_locally('./data/Financials.xml')
print(inst)

When executing this code py-xbrl automatically analyzes all imported taxonomies and their children.
(Whoa, indian taxonomy seems to be quite big... 😮)

Hi,
Thank you for taking out your time and replying so quickly.
I got the same error as you Manuel, it said,

File "C:\Users\admin\anaconda3\envs\tensorflow\lib\site-packages\xbrl\instance.py", line 336, in parse_xbrl
concept: Concept = tax.concepts[tax.name_id_map[concept_name]]
KeyError: 'WhetherApprovalTakenFromBoardForMaterialContractsorArrangementsorTransactionsWithRelatedParty'

I tried to look into your source code if could manually add these concepts, but it was a bit too much for me so reached out to the forum.

I tired this with other xml too, it gave a different concept error. if you have any kind of mapping function where you have listed out all such possible concepts like you did in taxonomy.py, will that work?

Hi,

A slight update, I tested a few more xmls on my side and noticed that only the Financials xml are having the "Concept" issue where as the other two types, that is Standalone and Consolidated are being processed seamlessly. Great work, helped me so much of manual coding.

I'll be very grateful if you could help me find a way to tackle the Financial statement errors.

Hi,

To make your job simpler, I am listing all the file names which has the errors, its a different concept name each time,
XBRL133522Standalone.xml
U17309TZ2016PTC028289-FS-2019-2020.xml
APEX_AUTO_LIMITED_2018-19_Financial Statement

each file throws an error for a different concept name. how do i manage these concept errors? can i manually add these to the file where you list all the concept names?

Hey,

the concepts are defined in the different taxonomy schemas imported by the instance document.

For example:
The first submission you provided failed at the concept:
"in-ca:WhetherApprovalTakenFromBoardForMaterialContractsorArrangementsorTransactionsWithRelatedParty"
which is prefixed by xmlns "in-ca". This xml namespace refers to the taxonomy with namespace "http://www.icai.org/xbrl/taxonomy/2016-03-31/in-ca".
This is linked to the schema file located at https://www.mca.gov.in/XBRL/2016/07/26/Taxonomy/CnI/IN-CA/in-ca-2016-03-31.xsd.
There you can check that the above mentioned concept is really not defined.

=> Thus the creator of this filing incorrectly used this non-existing concept which is why py-xbrl crashes.

The problematic line is the following:

py-xbrl/xbrl/instance.py

Line 336 in 7be61f7

concept: Concept = tax.concepts[tax.name_id_map[concept_name]]

Here I just expect the tax.name_id_map to have the given concept (which it also should according to the XBRL standard).

There where several discussions bevore about "How to treat incorrect XBRL". Because many users of py-xbrl just wan't to get data out of the reports and do not care if the report could be parsed 100%.

I plan to implement a functionality which would allow you to parse submissions that are incorrect (and maybe just issue a warning).
But I am not able to work on py-xbrl until Mid July (due to university stuff).

So in the mean time i would suggest to just but a "try-catch" block around the line where it's failing.
Like the following (untested):

# get the concept object from the taxonomy
tax = taxonomy.get_taxonomy(taxonomy_ns)
if tax is None: tax = _load_common_taxonomy(cache, taxonomy_ns, taxonomy)

try:
    concept: Concept = tax.concepts[tax.name_id_map[concept_name]]
    context: AbstractContext = context_dir[fact_elem.attrib['contextRef'].strip()]
except ValueError:
    print(f"All facts with concept {concept_name} will be ignored, due to invalid concept definition")
    continue
