A different open source project I use (ERPnext) uses this exchange rate API: https://exchangerate.host/ (or alternatively https://www.frankfurter.app/). Maybe this PR could be an inspiration? Also have a look at this older issue with a bit more information. |

Yes, that's a good option I think! I use LunchMoney which has a good UX for multiple currencies. You select a primary currency for the user account, and then all non-primary assets are stored as their original currency, but most displays of balances are converted on the fly (and typically show their original currency too) |

Interesting. I believe it would be better to store the exchange rates instead of fetching them on-the-fly. Otherwise the dependencies to the exchange rate provider is too high. If their service is down, Maybe would not be able to calculate the values in the primary currency. |

Probably the best to get started without relying on external providers might be the API from the European Central Bank. This is a reliable entity that is likely to be around for still some time and which covers the most important currencies in the world (unfortunately no support for many smaller currencies). ECB currently supports:

I would love to see some simple level of support for other currencies; not necessarily multi-currency across a single user account, but to allow for an account to use a different currency by default. This wouldn't have to be concerned with exchanges rates etc; I just change the user account default currency to GBP and use GBP all the time. |

@rickselby This is already done to some extent. You just need to seed your currency in db/seeds.rb, if you are familiar with rails. |

It seems everything is USD currency, however it would be good if assets, accounts etc could all be in different currencies. I have bank accounts and investments across multiple countries for example.
