AI Website CreatorAntique maps in the MZK, beside the atlases, are divided into three units. “Sbírka starých map” Collection of Antique Maps (partly digitized thanks to the Europeana Travel project and made accessible in the online digital catalogue searching for “STMpa” signatures), “Sbírka map 19. a 20. století” Collection of XIX-XX Century Maps (partly digitized thanks to the TEMAP project and currently with limited access only), and the Moll Collection.\n
The Moll Collection is a common name for a collector´s (composite) atlas assembled Bernard Paul Moll in Vienna in the 1740s and 1750s. It is it is the most significant and extensive unit within the library map holdings. Moll (1697-1780) spent his life in Vienna where served as a diplomat. The extensive collection (more than 12,000 sheets) includes not only maps but also veduta, town plans, mining maps, copies of inscriptions, etc. Although the collection is only a fragment of Moll's extensive collecting activities (neither the library nor the collection of products of nature have survived), it is a fine example of Enlightenment-era collecting. The original Moll´s handwritten catalogues have survived, testifying to the original arrangement of the collection. They are preserved in two editions in a total of 47 volumes. This original classification is also reflected in the modern access to the collection in the form of a digital, online accessible catalogue applying not only the classic metadata search in the library catalogue but also a time-space search.
