Opening a discussion thread to address some of the quirks of the various workstation-based K8 distributions. Some of these quirks are tied to the distribution directly, some are related to the plugins such as storage and loadbalancer egress, and some are tied to the relatively lower availability of hardware resources on a workstation versus a server class machine.
A few things to start with:
We frequently see timeouts from helm for components with high resource requirements, such as the elastic stack. To address this, we manually push the helm timeouts to 10 minutes for some of our deployments.
We also see issues when deploying persistent volume storage on workstation distributions; the volumes do eventually get created but they will take significantly longer than in a managed K8 environment. This is normally fixed by increasing timeouts.
Although we provide code for deploying the NFS volume provisioner, this is very problematic in terms of performance. It is highly recommended that you use local storage if you do not have a better PV option.
We have started to pin our versions of the workstation distros when testing, as we have seen issues when we just go with the "latest" version. In the future, we plan on having a better test matrix around this.
The M1 Macintosh still is presenting some problems, which we are working on. Since this is arm, our plan is to look at full arm support for MARA (ie, deploy MARA entirely on ARM).
