"The real satisfaction from mathematics is in learning from others and sharing with others."

- Bill Thurston

WHAT?

Pares Ordenados is a free online Directed Reading Program (DRP) in Spanish, i.e. it is a mathematics mentorship program, pairing mathematics undergraduate students with graduate student mentors, or early career mathematicians, for a semester-long reading project.

WHO?

Pares Ordenados especially aims to provide such mentorship to Spanish-speaking students in Latin America and Africa from historically excluded groups or non-traditional backgrounds, as well as to students at non-research oriented colleges and universities.
Some of the historically excluded groups are

 • Women
 • Students of African descent
 • Students of indigenous descent
 • Students who are victims of armed conflicts and/or forced displacement
 • Students who are members of the LGBTQIA+ community
 • Students who are immigrants or refugees
 • Students with visible and/or invisible disabilities
 • Students from Central America

WHEN?

The Fall 2023 edition will run from September 4, 2023 to December 15, 2023.
Applications open on July 3 at 8:00 am EST.
Applications close on August 14 at 11:59 pm EST.
You may see the schedule in Fall 2023 Edition in Editions.

HOW?

Pares Ordenados takes place online.

 1. Undergraduate students apply to be mentees. See Mentees.
 2.
Graduate students, or early carrear mathematicians apply to be mentors. See Mentors.

Mentees and mentors are paired based on mutual interests. Each pair decides on a topic for the semester. See examples of topics in Resources or in Editions.

Each ordered pair (mentor, mentee) meets online for one hour weekly.

Halfway through the semester, each pair decides on a final project and writes a project description that must be sent to the organizers. See examples of projects in Resources or in Editions.

Halfway through the semester, mentees and mentors attend the panel about Latinx/Hispanic mathematicians around the world.

At the end of the semester, there is a meeting where all mentees give short presentations about their topics.

WHAT FOR?

"What is belonging? The extent to which an individual feels accepted, valued, and legitimate within the community."

- Deanna Haunsperger

Pares Ordenados is about the community!
One of the main goals of this program is to foster collaborations among the members of our Latinx/Hispanic Math Community around the world.

Benefits for mentees:

 • Explore new and challenging topics through a more approachable learning environment.
 • Learn in a fun and stress-free environment.
 • Develop your skills in self-directed learning and written communication of mathematics.
 • Improve your ability to communicate mathematical ideas both in informal conversations and formal presentations.
 • Make connections with Latinx/Hispanic mathematicians around the world.

Benefits for mentors:

 • Develop mentoring skills through working with undergraduate students.
 • Review an interesting/important topic.
