How can I not commit to main when I release and also make source of truth my tags not package.json version

Hello,
I am facing this issue, I want to put tags as my source of truth then the package.json version. Is it possible in nx release? The problem to commit to main is the main branch is restricted and I don't know how to bypass those, so the only option I can consider is not to commit to main. Please suggest a better approach too if any.
