store and retrieve ssh key in GH secrets

I need to build a container image which needs a private key file in the repository copied to. Since I can't store the key as a file, I thought of storing it in secrets. Problem is I can't retrieve it to create the key file and copy to container image in GH action. It always returns ***, which seems to be expected behavior. Is there a way around it at all?
