I'm going to add these thoughts to github.com/semanticClimate and that should be our go-to repo for formal resources (I have a lot of data on /petermr/pyamihtml but only I know where much of that is.) Please shout if that gives problems.
We had an excellent set of meetings over the last 2/3 days. Some points:
Renu has done a good job of managing the admin and it's great to see her
Manav Rachna is wonderful; Vineeta, Jayaint and the 6 student-instructors. They get it.
The high-level purpose of semanticClimate is to help improve the "manual for the survival of humanity" (i.e. SYR and other reports) by doing "everything everywhere all at once" (Guterres)
The semantic documents should be aimed at a wide range of citizens (not just climate scientists) and include:
15-year-old school students
city and regional planners
school and college teachers
over-70s with difficulty reading PDFs (and English as a second language)
re-use of data (FAIR) by humans and machines (e.g. simple LMs)
farmers
travel
and many more
Material
The hackathon is based on exploring the IPCC's Synthesis Report (SYR), 3 working groups (WG1/2/3), Annexes (Glossary, Acronyms, Summaries) and 3 previous reports (SR15, SROCC, SRCCL)
50+ chapters have been transformed into semantic form and contain over 86,000 paragraphs and about 1000 figures.
The global IPCC Glossary has been semantified (about 700 terms) to include Wikimedia images and Wikidata links. Renu and others have added translations of terms to Indian languages. We will add ca. 1000 acronyms
Codes:
pygetpapers - search current Open Access literature and download
docanalysis - analysis OA literature for terms/named_entities
pyami - convert PDF2HTML, convert IPCC and UNFCCC material to semantic HTML. Simple static search system.
Delivery
Jupyter notebooks and Google Colab
Docker with installed codes
Timetable
Day 1. introductions/presentations. forming groups, installing/running software, learning the basis of IPCC/climate. Mainly guided. Propose projects for day 2
Day 2. projects at tables. We're open for innovative ideas
analyse a single chapter, and present it to the world. This has worked well over the years and is the default
explore a climate theme (e.g. migration). This is less structured and involves searching 50-70 chapters and also using OA literature (pygetpapers/docanalysis)
use additional technology (e.g. machine learning, natural language processing)
your own ideas! (reviewed on Day 1)
I am now full of confidence (we have the semantic material) and exciting people to explore it.
