Feature image width

I'm working on a version of this theme for my site. SenPress has the bones and the baked-in microformats I want.

I'm planning to use text across a narrower measure, say 700 pixels wide instead of the 900 on the theme. My problem is the width of feature images seems to be coded in a function and isn't changeable in the css. Is there a reason for this? I can edit the function, not a problem, but it seems an odd way to organise things.

I'm having similar issues with the hero image. I would prefer to have an image that is much less tall. The customiser suggests that it will work best at 1250 x 600, but rather than this being an option it insists that I crop to the predefined 1250 x 600. I'm having trouble seeing where to override this. Will keep looking.
