ES Version update storm

Difficult to reproduce. Sometimes the ES loop system gets stuck into a version update loop where the client is fighting with itself and the version update callback - or something? causing an out of control loop of state update messages between the client and server. I imagine if multiple clients are involved in the storm it would increase in magnitude.
