[Megathread] Backspace/Enter/Delete/Click behaviors in the editor

This is a megathread to discuss what should happen when Backspace/Enter/Delete/ mouse clicks are pressed in different situations in the editor.

Enter

• When a new block is inserted by pressing Enter in the slash menu
  • Divider: Insert and add a new line
  • Spreadsheet: Insert and focus on the first cell
  • Formula: Insert and focus on the formula input box
  • Quote: Insert and focus on the new quote block
  • Callout: Insert and focus on the new callout block
  • todo list/bulleted list/numbered list: Insert and focus on the first list item
  • TOC block: Insert and add a new line
  • Embed block: Insert and focus on the popover input
  • Code block: Insert and focus on the first line of code block
  • Heading: Insert and focus on the inserted heading block
• When the cursor is at the end of a quote/callout/todo list/bulleted list/numbered list block
  • The last line is empty: Jump to the parent block
  • The last line is not empty: Add a new list item
• When the cursor is in a spreadsheet cell: Jump to the next row
• When the cursor is at a spreadsheet title line
  • At the beginning: Add a new line above the title
  • Between texts: Focus on the first cell
  • At the end: Focus on the first cell
• When the cursor is in the document title line:
  • At the beginning / Between texts: Split the title
  • At the end: Add a new line at the beginning of the document

Backspace

• When the cursor is right after a:
  • Divider: Select the divider
  • Quote: Focus to the end of the quote block
  • Callout: Focus to the end of the callout block
  • todo list/bulleted list/numbered list: Focus to the end of the list block
  • TOC block: Select the TOC block
  • Embed block: Select the embed block
  • Formula: Select the formula block
  • Spreadsheet block: Select the spreadsheet block
  • Code block: Focus to the end of the code block
  • Paragraph: Focus to the end of the block
  • Heading: Focus to the end of the block
• When the cursor is at the beginning of a spreadsheet title line: Move the cursor to the end of the block above the spreadsheet
• When the cursor is at the beginning of the document: Do nothing

Delete

• When the cursor is right before a:
  • Divider: Select the divider
  • Quote: Focus to the beginning of the quote block
  • Callout: Focus to the beginning of the callout block
  • todo list/bulleted list/numbered list: Focus to the start of the list block
  • TOC block: Select the TOC block
  • Embed block: Select the embed block
  • Formula: Select the formula block
  • Spreadsheet block: Move the cursor to the beginning of the spreadsheet title line
  • Paragraph: Focus to the beginning of the block
  • Heading: Focus to the beginning of the block
• When the cursor is at the end of a spreadsheet title line: Do nothing

Left click

• Between adjacent non-text blocks (e.g. embed block / divider): insert a new line between the block

When discussing those behaviors above, we should also consider the blocks nested case. Behaviors may be different when a block is inside another block. Such blocks are:

Quote

the blocks can be nested in:

• Heading
• Paragraph
• CodeBlock
• Quote
• Callout
• Divider

Callout

the blocks can be nested in:

• Heading
• Paragraph
• CodeBlock
• Quote
• Callout
• Divider

In addition, some blocks can not be created by the user inside a block, e.g. users can't create Embed inside a Quote, but they can be dragged into. Such blocks may contain other blocks are:

• ListItem
• TaskItem
• Quote
• Callout

After discussion, we decide to not support nesting any blocks in quote/callout/list item
