📣 Office 365 CLI will become CLI for Microsoft 365 #1598
-
To align with Microsoft's marketing, we will rename Office 365 CLI to Microsoft 365 CLI. The new name will become effective in version 3 of the CLI which is currently planned to be released in the fall of 2020. Recently, Microsoft announced renaming Office 365 to Microsoft 365. Along with changing the name of the product, some of its building blocks have been renamed as well like Office 365 groups have become Microsoft 365 groups. To avoid confusion and align with the Microsoft marketing terminology, we have decided to rename Office 365 CLI to Microsoft 365 CLI. The new name will become visible in all our assets and code. The name of the npm package will be changed to Because the name change is a breaking change, we decided to plan it for the release of the next major version later this calendar year. Additionally, we want to give everyone enough advance notice to plan for this change. Following our approach from v2, we will release v3 with the new name as soon as possible to give you the ability to test your scripts and verify that everything works as expected with as little disruption as possible. Our ambition remains to help you manage all of Microsoft 365 using a single tool. Our team and contributors keep investing their time and effort into adding more functionality to make the Office 365 CLI a compelling tool to use in your toolset. |

UPDATE: To better align with Microsoft's marketing and balance CLI being a community-owned tool with its discovery in the ecosystem, we decided to use CLI for Microsoft 365 as the new name. The rollout plan, as communicated earlier, still stands. |
