It would be nice to be able to use an alternate key to define which record to set in lookup fields.

Would this achieve a result where you could update a lookup field on an entity based upon another lookup field on the same entity. Say for example I wanted to reset the owner of all my records to the user who created them. Could I update the Owner field using the Created By field?

Not sure that would be covered by my original requirement for this issue, but I definitely like the idea!
Feel free to create a new issue where you can detail the need :)
