Remove initialization of new empty dictionary.
The initialization of a new empty dictionary in
populate_user_commands() to collect the user
compilation flags caused user flags not to be returned by
populate_user_commands(). Thus the extra compilation added by the user
were ignored.
* build-all.py: populate_user_commands(): Remove initialization of a
new empty dictionary.
2019-08-29 Jeremy Bennett <jeremy.bennett@embecosm.com>
Remove calls to library assert.
Assert is not appropriate for benchmark code, and pulls in large
amounts of library function code. This patches provides a
simplified macro to replace it in two benchmarks.
This is the fix to GitHub Issue 10, see
https://github.com/embench/embench-iot/issues/10
* src/nettle-aes/nettle-aes.c (_aes_set_key, aes_set_encrypt_key)

throughout.
* src/nettle-sha256/nettle-sha256.c (nettle_hash_digest_func)

Add --relative option.
This provides consistenc with benchmark_size.py.
* benchmark_speed.py (get_common_args): Add --relative option.
2019-08-26 Graham Markall <graham.markall@embecosm.com>
Fix a bug in log handling.
A patch proposed by Graham Markall and committed by Jeremy
Bennett.
The target-module python module needs to import the log from
embench_core. We also rename the module to a more python friendly
name.
* pylib/run_gdbserver_sim.py: Rename from run-gdbserver-sim.py and
import log from embench_core.
* pylib/run-gdbserver-sim.py: Rename to run_gdbserver_sim.py.

Add user specification of section names.
This is a generalization of a patch proposed by Jon Taylor of ARM.
It allows the user to specify which section names make up
particular section types. Rename the --sections argument as
--metric for clarity and add --relative option for completeness.
* benchmark_size.py (build_parser): Add arguments to specify lists
of sections; for clarity rename --sections to --metric.
(validate_args): Capture the list of section names for each type
of section.
(benchmark_size): Use the specified section names to compute the
metric.
(collect_data): Rename 'sections' attribute to 'metric'.

2019-08-16 Jeremy Bennett <jeremy.bennett@embecosm.com>
Allow user to specify custom code to run benchmarks.
This is a transformtion to make the benchmark_speed.py script more
generic, ready for future expansion.
* .gitignore: Ignore __pycache__ directories and .pylintrc.

(collect_data): Read JSON from baseline dir.
* benchmark-speed.py: Import core files from pylib subdir; import
importlib.

This is still work in progress, since the script has a lot of hard
coding in it.

2019-08-09 Jeremy Bennett <jeremy.bennett@embecosm.com>
Clean up scripts to build benchmarks and run size benchmark.
This is mostly about linting the code. However we fix one
systemic bug where we were using literal sets rather than literal
lists to iterate through dictionaries.
* baseline-size.json: Created
* benchmark-size.py: Remove import of shutil, subprocess and
traceback; add import of loads from json.
(baseline): Remove as global variable.
(build_parser, create_logdir): Standardize layout.
(setup_logging): Use longer variable names.
(validate_args): Set 'builddir' global param from args; add
'absolute' entry to global params.
(find_benchmarks): Return benchmarks as list, use longer variable
name for benchmark interator.

(add_internal_flags, validate_tools, set_parameters): Use lists,
not sets when iterating.
(compile_file, compile_benchmark, compile_support): Standardize
layout.
(create_link_binlist): Use lists, not sets when iterating.
(link_benchmark): Standardize layout.
(main): Pass benchmark list between find_benchmarks and
log_benchmarks.

Clean up of the build-all.py script
This tries to abstract away the details of building a commmand
line, although the defaults are GCC/LLVM centric. So long as a
compiler and linker accept arguments on the command line, it
should be possible to drive a build using this script.
The code is also much more compliant with Python coding standards.
* build-all.py: Remove unused traceback import, define gp as empty
dictionary.
(build_parser): Revise arguments to command.
(create_logdir): Remove extraneous space character.
(setup_logging): Use PEP8 compliant variable names.
(log_args): Rewritten for new set of arguments.
(validate_args): Remove extraneous space, don't use len to test
for empty arguments.
(create_builddir): Use explicit exception names, don't raise new
exceptions.
(find-benchmarks): Remove extraneous space and use PEP8 compliant
variable names.
(log_benchmarks): Use PEP8 compliant variable names.

Fix riscv32 size-test-llvm configuration to match upstream.
The -msave-restore option is not yet in upstream Clang/LLVM.
Should be added back once this is available, since it is a
signficant win for Clang/LLVM.

Clean up a couple of annoyances
* INSTALL: Change to reference doc/README.adoc
* NEWS: Replace BEEBS content with Embench content.
2019-06-08 Jeremy Bennett <jeremy.bennett@embecosm.com>
Fix LTO problems in the build system.
Attempting to use Embench with BEEBS identified some key issues,
notably around the handling of flags. CFLAGS should not be
overridden in configure.ac or Makefile.am.
There appears to be a bug in LTO, whereby not all functions in a
library are retained, so dummy libraries are always compiled with
LTO turned off.

* configure.ac: Save and restore CFLAGS, so no values are set if
user sets none, use EMBENCH_CPPFLAGS, EMBENCH_CFLAGS and
EMBENCH_LDFLAGS to pass custom flags to buidls and DUMMY_CPPFLAGS,

building dummy libraries to avoid a LTO issue.
