Proper way to gracfully undo a refresh --index with merge conflicts?

So I stg refresh --index --patch a-patch-earlier-in-the-stack and get merge conflict. Too many that I don't want to deal with them. stg reports:

error: merge conflicts; resolve conflicts manually then refresh or undo the operation with `stg undo --hard`.

But when I do that, I have lost the non-staged changes! How can I (or stg) prevent that?
