Can the gap formed by the core of a giant planet separate the dust in a protoplanetary disk into two distinct reservoirs?
The answer: it's complicated!
If dust particles trapped at the outer edge of a planetary gap are subject to fragmentation, the small particles produced in collisions can penetrate the gap and contaminate the inner disk, even for large planetary masses.
Only under the absence of fragmentation and under certain conditions is it possible for a planet to completely block dust accretion in a protoplanetary disk.
This could help to constrain the origins of the isotopic dichotomy observed in the solar system.
